Why I hate donating...

My father is into real estate as his retired hobby. He doesn't sell, but buys places and fixes them up, resells or rents them. Anyhow recently he picked up a building which housed a restaurant that went out of business. It included all the chattles (tables, chairs, freezers, fridges). These items were in fairly good condition. They worked great. (Previous owner had financial problems and only lasted a few years. It wasn't like 20 year old stuff.)

So when I have time off I help him as a father/son thing. We had a dozen good sized tables a few dozen sets of padded chairs. Could we have sold it to someone opening a restaurant? Probably. Wouldn't be able to get nearly its value though because its used and that.

Okay so I suggest donating it all to the local soup kitchen/wayward men sorta place. They make it some huge process and come in and "determine" if its suitable. So she never gets back to us. Finally after asking, we are told that "Sorry, the executive team decided we wanted to buy all new funiture and equipment" !!!

So let me get this straight, these socialites and cronnies want to spend donated money they've received on stuff that they could have otherwise free, and deprive programs that could aid these men and women from retraining and getting jobs?

I just don't get it anymore. Try to do something reasonable and there is countless stupidity that hinders it.

And don't get me started on our salvation army. After donating a few thousand dollars worth of crap we learned they turn around and sell it ! Sorry buddies but next time it goes to the diabetes society who does not hock crap that was given in good favour.

That is not the point. The point is that these people need to be eliminated from the gene pool, ja?

I buy a couple of "novelty" stuff at our Salvation Army but you have to remember that the money they get from selling stuff they put into the fund or whatever. Sucks that they don't use what they get but maybe they make better use out of selling the items.

That is stupid what that place did with those chairs and tables though. If they were completely fine other than being used of course there is no reason not to take em and use them to save money. Oh well.....

There was a thread about this regarding the salvation army and mismatched living room furniture a few months ago. I echo your frustration....

Additionally my elderly neighbor from a few years ago had several worthy items she wanted to donate because she was moving into a retirement home and had to get rid of them. It was nice fancy furniture, nice bed, dresser, desk and more. So I move it outside for her and the people come to collect stuff. They pick amongst it but leave the big ticket items.

I say along the lines "uh WTF? why aren't you taking this stuff?" "oh well those items require assembly and we would need things like SCREWDRIVERS"
like DUH.
Are people that useless anymore? They didn't know how to operate a screwdriver and felt that perhaps it would "inconvenience" those who might receive it because they would have to spend time assembling it. Like HELLO you are able young people and mean to tell me that if need be you wouldn't set it up for someone? I said I would let them use my phone number and I'd come set it up, even put it in the truck for them if they needed it. "Nope sorry, can't do that."

It is just... frustrating.

edit: They spelt "Thy", amongst spelt "amonst"

I remember back in 98 the company I worked for wanted to donate its older PC's (only 2 years old... P200's and 233's running Win95) to a school district or a church. Turned out that the school and the church wanted service guarantees before they would accept the donation. :Q:Q:Q:Q

The company ended up destroying everything and filling a recycle bin with it all.

They have operating costs that have to be covered. They have to pay rent and pay their staff -- charity isn't free.

You want to kill people because they decided to buy new equipment for their soup kitchen?

Yeah how about the storys of new yorkers during the 9/11 crisis?

The salvation army was there with food, water, and supplies.

The Red Cross was SELLING blankets for $5 a piece :|

Not to mention all of that "Red Cross 9/11 money" where did that go?
