The big mfr's are trying to choke out the new SSD startups with low prices. Seems every company and their dog is getting into the SSD market, since all you have to do is buy off the shelf controllers, nand, and firmware and slap a sticker on it.

More people are making a move to SSD due to recent climb in mechanical disk. That's why prices are coming down - but why is that a surprise ? Like with any technology when it matures and widely gets adapted this happens and SSDs are no exception.

could be price war, i noticed this price decrease around the same time the intel 330 was released.

the 3 big companies (intel/samsung/curical) appear to be fighting !

Crucial & Samsung have been rumored to be looking for price wars for some time now. Since both companies can make their money on volume.

Win7 also makes it very easy to use a SSD as the boot drive and move everything to a second HDD now.

Crucial is Micron's brand name, Micron is partnered with Intel on the current 25nm NAND fabrication. That's why Intel's budget series are actually cheap, also because they're using Sandforce now & got a very sweet deal.

Don't forget - there's an old rule - technology always gets cheaper over time. Also, we are still in the grip of a worldwide recssion and sales are down. Follow the price of oil - a huge drop in the last 30 days. SSDs are part of the overall scenario. I am not at all surprised by the price drop.

Hmmm, wasn't there supposed to be a significant price decrease when the 2x nm devices hit the market? And didn't those devices hit the market earlier this year?

Sounds like many of you are looking way too deep into this.

2Xnm MLC NAND hit the market already in early 2011.

cost decrease (how much money they spend to make it) not price decrease (how much money you spend to buy it)
Lower cost + Same price = higher profit margins

Intel & Micron were the first with 25nm NAND that dropped production costs once the fabs were running. The thing is Intel likes a 60% profit margin on their products do their prices didn't drop that much. Add into that the other companies weren't ready with 2x yet.

Now Samsung & Toshiba are pumping out Toggle NAND the game has changed.

Just bought my Crucial M4 512GB . I shall recieve it next week. From amazon for 399.99 ,,, Crucial dropped their prices big time as this was 800 when it first came out. Others arent reducing their prices. Sammy 830 512GB is 700 to 800 dollars. Will you notice a speed difference ? nope it will be soo fast ,, everything instant and boot time 16.9 . adob cs5 first launch 1.9 seconds ,,,,, dont blow your money on a OCZ or other expensive drives,,, at the end its the same sniz,, also people love their M4's whoever gets it.

I will connect only ssd and launch repair disc as I will put my c image on the ssd. its 512kb btw is that ok, or it needs to be 4096 ? thx,,, gl

The Crucial drives also use a tried and true Marvell controller, and they seem to have gotten their firmware in order on both the C300 and M4 series. With Intel starting to branch out and use non-Intel controllers, I'd put the Crucial drives on my short list of SSDs to buy (and did buy another one).
