Why haven't computer games gone to DVD yet?

I dunno about you guys, but I'm tired of 3-4 CD installs...not even just games but software in-general. It's about time that we get to using our DVD drives. Am I the only that feels this way?

Actually, it has been tried. Though only once to my knowledge. Baulder's Gate, when it first came out, came in CD and DVD flavour. Alas, they didn't repeat that for the sequel and spinoffs.

I don't have a DVD drive.

I haven't had an install more than 2 CDs since Neverwinter nights. Before that it was only Baldur's gate.

DVD drives haven't penetrated the market enough yet.

Distributing games on DVD would exclude a huge potential user base.

Because not everyone has a DVD yet, but everyone does have CD. Until market penetration is almost 100% (remember, a lot of people are still using 2-3+ year old PCs) you won't see it mainstream.

I'd give it another year or two.

I'm still pissed that everyone has to use CD's. I mean, when all you have is a 3.5 floppy drive...it makes it a pain in the ass. :|

My guess is that most software companies do not bother making a DVD version of games because they would not sell well enough.

Virtually every home computer has a CD drive, and although the percentage of "gamers" who have a DVD drive is probably higher than the general computer-using public, there must not be enough demand for games on DVD to force the companies to produce two versions.

I still don't have a DVDROM in my computer. I've been through two set-top DVD players, though. I won't have a DVDROM either; if I get a DVD player for my computer it will be DVD+/-RW

DVD's are more expensive to produce.
Most games fit on 1 or 2 cd's.
Many people don't have DVD drives yet.

I had a DVD drive, but got rid of it cuz I don't watch movies on my PC and there are no apps I use on DVD.

Encarta comes in a DVD edition tho. More content, and 1 dvd vs like 6-7 cd's.
