Why haven't AMOLED monitors happened?

I'm a fan of AMOLED. Because the great black levels allow for much better cinema...

So why haven't they happened?

Because expensive.

People are still plenty happy with their $100, 21.5" 720p LEDs, neither the consumer nor the business sectors are going to be shelling out $400 per monitor so the blue in their Microsoft Word ribbon is just a little bit prettier. There's no market for it.

People who care about "great black levels for their cinema" are either buying into much nicer home theatre setups, or already buying professional level (very expensive) monitors marketed for the graphic design sector.

I read about OLED quite frequently.

The issue isn't that OLED is expensive, or anything like that. The problem is that the blue OLED material is not production ready. It decays too fast. Expect the max life of the blue portion of the pixel to be a few years at max. And as it starts to decay your picture will lose its blue intensity. Right now many OLED screens are using double the blue (pixel size is larger) to help compensate.

There is a lot of OLED on cell phones (in mass production) because the industry assume you'll retire your phone before the blue material wears out. For TVs and computer monitors, that's another story.

It's definitely more the degradation of some of the pigments. Did any owners of that 11 inch Sony OLED TV that was sold starting early 2008 report when they started seeing degradation?

Yeah.

Heck, a 22" AMOLED would be perfect for me...and wearing out wouldn't be so much an issue because it would be used mainly for cinema...alas...

i would guess because LCDs have reached nowhere near their maximum potential.

and because of ip and other regs so people can't build stuff out of their garage.

Pretty simple: Too expensive to be viable outside of smaller smartphone or tablet screens currently. Also isn't mass produced yet. And has trade-offs in terms of degradation over time.

Then again, all screens - including TN, IPS, and VA all have trade-offs. There isn't a perfect solution as of yet. Although OLED does seem to be the best in terms of image quality, it is the most promising tech on the horizon. Assuming the price lowers to a point that bigscreens using OLED are viable.
