Why have a forum signature?

I'm just gonna throw this out there.

In all forums everyone has signatures, and some WAY more involved than others like 8 lines of a quote form god-knows-where. I'm just curious, why? What's deal with signatures?

If you have big complicated signature, why do you have it?
If you have a simple name signature, why?

I just want to know some of the reasoning behind it all. You've obvioulsy gone to the trouble of putting it in there. What is the thought process behind that?

It's a sort of digital age *face*, believe it or not.
People won't remember you by your nickname and/or avatar.
They will however remember you by your signature, and then also nickname and avatar.

I used to have one on other forums. It used to consist of maybe system specs, maybe an interesting quote I heard, it was a way of spreading a little of what I have with others without making a post about it (something more subtle). Now I just don't bother anymore because I really don't care that much. I think it's mostly a kind of, "By the way, you might find this interesting or funny," thought.

I just feel it adds a little insigh into me,Like people may were a geeky t-shirt say a linux shirt. And then you see them in a crowd and you go Oh I use linux blah blah blah.I feel the same way about my sig.If you read it and get it then you prolly understand me to some degree,

well, this is the only category I've seen for basically useless questions so I figured I'd put it here.

But you want to get technical, let's talk about the environmental and biological factors involved in someone choosing to create a signature containing more than 2 lines vs a short signature. Maybe we can find some parallels by demographic.

Useless nontechnical questions go in Off Topic (or Politics and News, depending on your perspective). HT is for *technical* discussions (which may or may not also be useless 😛).

If we really want to get technical, we could discuss the chemical imbalances in the brain that may make it possible for someone not to figure out what "highly technical" means vs. "off topic."
