The Voodoo5 compares with the original GeForce in terms of speed. Yet it costs more than $100 more expensive. The GeForce2 rapes the Voodoo5 for the same price. Only in FSAA is Voodoo5 superior but GeForce has T&L also. Voodoo5 doesn't.

Somehow, I get the impression that none of you have tried both cards. Or at least, tried them long enough to get them both working properly. No doubt my CLAP2 is faster, but the original Geforce (which I own as well)? Don't think so. Unless your only barometer is 3DMark 2000, which is completely useless. I don't know why people are so fascinated by this benchmark when it doesn't reflect the performance of the cards in any real world game.

The V5 doesn't have enough power? How are we coming to this conclusion? Because it doesn't hit triple digits in low resolution Q3A benchmarks? You have got to be kidding. I get around 75fps at 1024, everything maxed. How much more do you need than that? Sure the GTS scores a bit higher, but I certainly can't tell the difference, except that the V5 looks better. Unless you have first hand experience using a product, find something better to do than trash the hell out of it.

I can't invision ever reaching the level of fanaticism required to shell out 300+ for a video card. Neither the V5 or the GF2 will make it into any of my machines at that price.

My old tried and true V3 2000 still makes the grade in UT (the only game I play regularly). Since I run on a K6-III 450, I am still CPU bound so a faster card wouldn't get me much anyway.

I am about to upgrade to a Duron 700. This will relieve the CPU problem, but I think I will STILL stick with the V3 for a while. I want to wait for the Matrox 800 and ATI Radeon (sp?) to appear. Once a little competition arives for nVidia, I suspect the price of 3D cards to drop quite a bit. The margins nVidia is commanding for the high end cards is unbelieveable! This invites competition. Don't count ATI out. They have more money than GOD and have been in the OEM business for some time.

I don't rant about video cards because in general, I don't see anything to rant about.

umm, have you looked at the numbers lately?

I'd hardly consider that a "raping", and also those benchmarks are in Q3:A, one the V5's biggest alleged weaknesses is an immature OpenGl driver. Additionally the V5 scales alot more to higher CPU's then the GF2; and finally with more UT engine games on the way (most notably Duke4) it'll be nice having glide(not to mention for all those old games we all have lying around.) I really think the decision between the two cards isn't as cut & dry as everybody's making it out to be.

Panther,

Have you looked at the numbers recently? The V5 was keeping pace with the GF2 at low resolutions but when the resolution was increased it started to fall behind. The V5 slowed to the point where it was about 10 frames behind the GF2, and believe me you will notice that!
Considering that the two cards are roughly the same price and the GF2 performs considerably better (plus Nvidia has way better driver support than 3dfx does) why would you buy a Voodoo5?

Muerto - In the area of D3D, I think that 3dfx has as good if not better drivers than NVIDIA. For OpenGL (which is used by far, far fewer games), NVIDIA leads the pack. 3dfx, of course, has the best GLIDE drivers.

Don't confuse NVIDIA's "leaks" of beta drivers a sign of good driver support. Far more games have trouble working out of the box with NVIDIA drivers than with 3dfx drivers (go to a few game companies' websites and read the support boards).

I have a voodoo 5 5500 and I love it. It's not as fast as the Geforce 2 but the graphics are much better.
If you need speed then go with the geforce2
if you want high quality graphics then go with the voodoo 5 5500.
Enough said!

The main reason why I'd get a V5? I'm a UT and Tribes fiend and still play some other types of games from time to time(NHL2k, NFS etc...). And then whenever I feel like popping into a game of Q3F I can still get 60fps@1024x768:HQ.

It just seems like alot of people are dismissing this card based on some insignificant 3dmark2000 numbers. But if benchmarks are really important to you by all means get the GF2.

What it basically comes down to is that the V5 is a very fast (admittedly not as fast as the GF2; although most of the time the difference is marginal) and flexible card.

However, if Q3 is the only game in your life and/or your CPU is <600mhz I'd definately recommend the GF2. But for me the V5 seems to be the better card.

heh NFS4, trying to start something? poke a stick and watch em fly!

pretty much everyone stopped, becuase everyone know's pretty much everything they want to know about the V5 5500. NFS4, this forum will liven up again when the subject comes to G800, NV20, and Rampage.

You just watch.

Those of us who bought V5-5500s understand the following:

- 4x FSAA 800x600, 16bit (22bit effective) is worth it.
- GLide support is worth it.
- We don't play Q3A to the exclusion of all other games.
- The card will be replaced in the December-February timeframe with a Rampage part.

It's that simple. Not all of the above apply to everyone who bought the card, but it seems to be the general theme.

I bought it because I refuse to use nVidia parts until such time as there is nothing else available. I do not like nVidia's marketing practices, their buggy drivers, or their constant beta testing on end-users, both hardware and drivers.

I also won't argue the above points. I'm entitled to my opinion, and this one I've had ever since the Riva 128 came out.

I bought a V5-5500, dropped it in, turned off Vsync, installed the Wicked3D miniGL driver, and was good to go. No crashes, no lockups, just gameplay. I'm happy.

I rarely play 3d games anymore, but when I do, my Banshee downstairs is still plenty fast enough. Just as fast as when I bought it.

It seems as though people think their cards get slower and slower just because there are faster cards out...

I can play Half Life and Unreal Tournament just fine.. if I had Q3 I would play that too. I know someone who has several system all with banshee's and they all play Q3 smoothly (he has tons of lan games, loads of fun).

Voodoo3 is plenty fast enough too... I'm sure Voodoo5 is fast as well, although it overpriced. I don't plan on upgrading.. probably for a few more years.

Oh yes it will ;) If you have any extra 5500's laying around, I'll take them off your hands :p
