Why has there never been a 'series' portrayed 'way back' in time?

I'd love to see a tv show done well that say portrayed the day to day lives of persons in say ' ancient egypt' or 'ancient south america', etc. You know a Seinfeld like show but set way back when . . .

I'm saying something done very well, not just totally tounge in cheeck. . .

Because a period piece is expensive to do in the first place. Not many networks want to dump a lot of money into something like that. Especially if it's a comedy under those circumstances. It would probably be awful no matter how well the production is.

Voyagers wasn't like that. It was a fun show with a little bit of education thrown in to boot.

Happy Days was a success. Gary Marshall thought this idea was great back then because when you run reruns the show would never look outdated.

Period shows have been done.

Little House on the Prarie ( and every western ever made )
MASH, Hogan's Heroes, Black Sheep Squadron, ( and every other war series )

The reason these shows were successfull is that we can remember the time periods or have parents or grandparents that lived in these eras. So we have a frame of reference that we can relate with. Ancient Greece or Egypt or the Roman empire wouldn't be the same since most people really don't know or care or can relate to that time period.
