Why has no video game yet really incorporated this:

Ok, lets take for example DIablo II. Is it too much to ask to have, say, 4 stages for a person's appearance.

Appearance I: standard starting
Appearance II: larger as strength is gained
dito, so basically as a character gains strength they get larger and larger.

Alternatively as a magician gains in magic they could become more frail and feeble looking (like all great mages).

I realize this would make for many many more graphics (all the ones they currently have for chars plus all over again for each size), but from a programming point of view its easy as hell and I think would be really cool.

naw, that wouldn't be realistic.. just because you gain in experience doesn't mean you gain in physical strength too.. it just means you're more competent and skillful at killing.

Everquest kinda has what your asking... but not with the characters themselves. A mage or necro pet in EQ changes as the character levels. At really high level, the mage's pets are insanely huge (they're summoned elementals.. so a fire elemental from a 50mage is WAY bigger then a fire elemental summoned by a 20 mage). And for a necro, the pet changes from a skeleton to a spectre at 50+.

Plus, it would take up more memory, especially on the clients end. That's alright to most of us that have 128mb+ ram and PIII700, but a lot of ppl out there are still running PII200 w/64meg ram and TNT.

If anything that should be done to enhance the visual quality of the game is RESOLUTION!!! 640x480 does not cut it today! 4 yrs ago it was fine, but today that is just way too low.

They did that a long time ago. Mario doubled in size once you got the magic mushroom. :p

Well.. even if your character gets much stronger, do you think he/she would look that much bigger under all those weapons/clothing/armor? Keep in mind that they're fairly buff to begin with. Have you seen martial arts champs? They don't look big like body builders, they look very fine-tuned and refined.

The characters should gain 5 pounds for every hour played... just like the game player. They could even develop "office chair butt." :D

Fable was the first that I recall doing this back when it came out in the early 2000s.

Use heavy weapons and you'll get buff. Use magic and you'll get pale and thin. Be evil and you grow horns and dark stains/veins. Be good and you get angelic aura and tattoos.

Edit: Mother F*cker, why did you necro a 12 yr old thread?

awesome necro! I almost responded too!
Edit: More fighting games should also keep the damage through the rounds like that one last MK

glen, this thread has lain, dead and forgotten, for 12 years. You were the 'necromancer' who bought it back from the dead.

I was trying to find some of my old posts, so I searched on PII200. Is resurection a bad thing?

It's frowned upon. It doesn't really contribute anything to the forums and it just adds clutter since no one is actively participating in this conversation any more.

glen, ignore him. Necroing is great in moderation and when well-calculated. Your necro wasn't outstanding, but your (obviously feigned) cluelessness in its response was quite a pleasure to read.

Shadowbane did this, for strength. Your size was in direct relation to your strength attribute, so there were tiny weak elf mages and massive huge Minotaur barbarians.

After 12 years, examples are a bit easier to find... I like the way your character looks increasingly corrupted in Shadow of the Colossus. Katamari Damacy is the epitome of what the OP described.
