Ok, I'm a college student, as many of you ATer's are. I also work for a living to be able to eat and sleep in a bed and stuff. I have student loans (that cover about half of my tuition) and I make $7.50/hour at a local tech support. The government takes $1.35/hour of my paycheck, or 18% of what I could make. I'm all about government programs and stuff, and having them collect taxes, but can't they go a little easier on the people who go to school full time and work? Why do people that make ~ $6k/year paying 18% tax anyways? Why do I pay money when I have to borrow from them to pay tuition? What's going on?!

Until enough citizens start voting to make their discontent known, this will continue.

Here is another thing I never understood. Why not give students a break, and atleast make the text books non-taxable items.

They already do. No idea why 18% of your check is taken, but I attend full time and work for the university and have only 3-5% of paycheck taken out for taxes.

The bookstore at the University of Washington gives back a patronage refund for staff and students for the exact amount of sales tax.

That is a good question. The fed is only 10% from that tax bracket.

According to my Social Security statement, I've paid ~7.5 percent of my "salary" to Social Security and Medicare.

Dont worry your boss also pays 7.5% salary to SS as well. Kids going to college will never see a benefit to that tax.

Don't you love it? I can't wait to see the lawsuits resulting in about forty years.

Why does the government do the same thing to me, while I have no voting rights? Taxation without representation.

but you'll get most of your taxes back anyway?

Just wait until you make more money and look at your w2. You'll want to cry when you see 35 thousand in takes.

Textbooks are no longer taxed at my College. Fortunately, the professors feel the pain of most students and are just as unhappy about the cost of the books.

People who think Social Security is going to die are foolish. Sure, more people soon will be retired than people contributing to social security, and there will be less to go around. Unless they end up taking more out of everyone's paycheck, most retired folks will have to get by with less. But will Social Security die soon? I think not. Maybe another system will take its place, but its something that we all need in one way or another.

Between you and your boxx 15% of your salary goes to SS, and you will likely never see any of it.

I wouldn't collect unemployment anyways. I'd have to be dirt poor and not even able to eat ramen noodles before I'd do that!

Why not? The company pays into, why not take from them since they fired you?

the gov't has housing for the elderly and stuff...why not for students?..ok that's asking for too much hehehehe...well, you knw the elderly gov't housing rent is super duper cheap and really nice....if they had something like that for students that would be nice.....

well, i got a full grant for my tuition and extra cash grant on the side from the california gov't (can u believe that...the cal. gov't gave me this.....well 2 yrs straight now heh...)

and have a part time IT job on the side.....i guess i'm doing ok for now, but for the rest of the students, if there are just a few more benefits to help us financially...that'd be great...
