Why Google Glass will fail with consumers

I don't know that they're meant for "consumers". There's a lot of good uses for them, and people will come up with more creative stuff, but I think they're better for niche tech uses.

I suppose they're no different than the Bluetooth earpieces when they first came out. Remember how crazy it was to see someone walking down the street talking to themselves. It was rude and a little weird. Still is in many ways.

Personally I don't think my life needs a HUD. Then again in 10 years when these are affordable to the masses, that could change.

Maybe I'm just getting old, but I still think people walking around using them are rude and look retarded. They have their time to be used, but like most people using cell phones in general, have no concept of when.

at 1500 they aren't meant to be consumer devices.

But after Glass is in the world for a few years, they will figure out what works, what doesnt, what kind of apps would be handy, which ones are a waste, what kind of UI works best, etc.

2nd or 3rd generation versions could be smash hits though.

Its enough as it is that people who always wear their blutooth earpieces look and act like complete douchbags, and blutooth is only auditory information. I imagine Google Glass would only make it worse.

Then again it makes it really easy to know who to avoid.

1. They’re Rude
Well, so are fucking cell phones. After a decade of common use people dont seem to mind any more.
Manners have changed, as they always do.

Used to be a time you never left the house without a hat. A lady never showed her ankle. Children never spoke in public.
We call that the 1800's. And its no longer the 1800's.

2. They Inspire Mistrust

As do cell phones. They all have cameras and most of them today do HD video. They can also record voice just sitting in your pocket.

Again, time moves on, manners change, people will get used to it.

3. They’re Going To Cost Way Too Much
So did cell phones, so they subsidized them while you were on contract.
Of course that actually makes them cost MORE, because obviously you cant run a business on smiles.
But since most Americans arent good at math, they dont seem to mind.

Nobody needs or wants a computer.
Nobody will ever need more than 640k
Nobody will want a tablet
Nobody would want this Bluetooth stuff
why would anyone other than colleges need this interwebs thing?

Prices will come down, people will buy them, and it will change life in some way. When it's undetectable or even integrated into an implant, oh yes, life will change.

Consumers wont pick this up. But every lazy asshole cop and government fartbag will demand on of these things along with their Segway

Actually for tablets we have evidence.
They tried selling them, failed.
Then Steve put his infamous logo on the back of an underpowered, limited function one, and sure as shit it made a trillion dollars.

I think the problem with Google is more marketing than design.
If this fucking thing had an Apple logo on it then rabid fanboys would be in here explaining how wrong everyone else is about the awesomeness of a face computer.

Cell phones are still considered rude, homie. As is photographing someone without their consent, even though the camera has existed for centuries.

As do cell phones. They all have cameras and most of them today do HD video. They can also record voice just sitting in your pocket.

It was never a common concern to be worried about tape recorders in people's pockets. And to have an electronic device in your hand is very different from aiming it directly at a person. Google Glass is always aimed.

So did cell phones, so they subsidized them while you were on contract.
Of course that actually makes them cost MORE, because obviously you cant run a business on smiles.
But since most Americans arent good at math, they dont seem to mind.

Google Glass will never become ubiquitous to the point where it comes down dramatically in cost. It's a niche product.

There was an offer that I had the opportunity to put in for (and cross my fingers) and explore opportunities to improve myself as an educator. But then, I saw the price tag that I'd have to pay. Yikes.

They don't even mention that you have to talk to it to get it to do anything. Who uses voice activated stuff in public?

How is Google Glass analogous to any of those ridiculous suggestions? This isn't an indispensable tool, it's a one-shot gimmick.

It's more comparable to this failure: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Flvd5gVT7fg
Except that was a general purpose computer not hinged around a gimmick of a camera.
