Why flame the SBLive!?

How come so many people are having problems with this card? I've been using SBLive ever since it came out, and I have built systems with it in the past with absolutely no problems either. Why does the card have problems with VIA chipsets? as a matter of fact, I have the KT7A-R and it runs fine with it...or am I just one of the lucky guys 🙂

I dunno why some are not affected by it...however there are many who were and it is documented and recognized by many mobo manufacturers and via themselves, so that points to a real issue if there is one...

I think most people have a bad opinion of creative and sblive is because of their unwillingness to acknowledge there was and is a problem. If they have now they were the last to admit it...I think it is a combination of several issues working to gether to really muck things up, hence why having a via chipset and a sblive doesn't assure you will have an issue...obvious some other variables that come into play here.

I flame them because they make no real top of the line products anymore...The santa cruz, phillips, and hercules are all better...vid cards no more...dvd-roms no good anymore...cd-roms are crap in most situations...and on and on and on. Much better products by many other manufacturers. They have seemed to have lost the inventive feeling to continue to come out with cutting-edge product. Pretty much mediocre company now...

Interesting. I have the KT7R and have had no probs with my XGamer (basically a tarted up SBlive!) I bought it because it had 4-speaker out and came with a bundle of games I wanted, but didn't own.

I have had not a single problem with it. I've noticed (on this forum) that everyone who has probs with it (uh, that would be everyone but us!) doesn't have an Abit mobo, they have another brand. Not saying that Abit is the best, but I find that little fact very interesting.

ps
I love my KT7R stable, versatile, expandable, no probs. I just wish it supported DDR! 🙁

I have had a SB live since the begining too. I have used it on my old BX boards and now my MSI K7T Pro 2A. Never a problem.

I to have a SB Xgamer 5.1 on a IWILL KK266 and not a problem one. Used it on my old KT7 and had an IRQ sharing problem but that was an easy fix. They seem to be a high quality card to and for me.

Come on...they have delivered no real innovation since they introduced the Live. When it first came out it was a great card but now, over 2 years later it is STILL THE SAME CARD. Imagine if nVidia tried to do that in the video card industry.

It's still the best bang for the buck if you need a good card. Creative has been and still is known for selling junky stuff. They carved themselves a nitch in PC history with their original Sound Blaster sound card. Didn't innovate back then either. I went with a wondrous STEREO PAS16 which was "Sound Blaster" compatible. Creative didn't offer a 16bit stereo card at the time. But Media Vision eventually took a dirt nap anyway, with no help from the courts. Just can't compete with that "Sound Blaster" name recognition I guess.

<< Why flame the SBLive!? >>

becuase alot of the forum user around here like to jump on bandwagons just fame for the hell of it without any real experiance of the product. Repeating what they read from another post. Just like water cooler info at work most of it bullsh@t and half truthfull. Sure the SBLIVE has its issues and it was not a good idea for Creative to not acknowlege this Crackle and pop problem. As for what they have instore for us in products we will never know untill this fall at Comdex. I agree that their Nvidia Video cards suck and have the worst 2d display of them all but their cdrom and dvd drives are just low quality remarked products anyways. A wise buyer should know the product and not depend on brand name alone. Brand name trust is really a thing of the past. To bad though, it sure made it more easy to shop in the past.

Yeah, my Live! Value has been going strong since I bought it a few years back, majority of the time, issues that arise with the card can be fixed, and complications are caused by users(some of the time, not all).

stole your teeth wtf!?!? this must be stoppoed CREATIVE STEALS HUMAN TEETH TO MAKE 2D CHIPS FOR NVIDIA GPUS!!!!

Creative have shown 0-zero-zilch-nadda support for their SB Live in Win2k in over a year. Their idea of support is to release new hardware and have you spend more money to get an upgrade. Hmmm, sounds like a large software company that seems to do this quite well...

I had an SB Live 5.1 that worked fine in Win98. Upgraded to Win2k Pro and could not for the life of me get sound without there being a problem.

BB had a great deal on an SB16 so I picked one up. Still not great, but for $30 it'll do until upgrade time.

I like SB Live, i think it's a good card if you pick up the OEM one. When I got it, a year and a half ago they were really the only descent sound card. Now, I would prolly get a XP or phillips AE(when they work better in 2000).

"From what I've been reading the problems occur with an AMD based system.."

You obviously know nothing....try reading many of the post here and elsewhere this problem has happened on intel systems as well and is pretty well linked to via chipset...which GENIUS makes chipsets for intel based mobos as well...

cpus have nothing to do with this...

pft... those specs where probably written years ago. It only goes to show how piss poor creative support it. I've had lots of Creative hardware, most of the stuff sucks esp. the TNT2 video cards (1 would cause the screen to shake). My SBLive! was the last product I will buy from creative.

The Live isn't bad, I was actually very happy with it when I had mine. But the point is there are much better products out now.

As for the company, I don't like them because they destroyed Aureal and have been sitting on their asses for the last 2 years.(except for the marketing team, they're doing wonders with the product they have)
Driver support is also very bad.

I have found somthing interesting. I was alpha testing some code that used DirectSound, but OpenGL for video. Sound was fine, nice and clear. But when the programer switched to DirectDraw, RIGHT AWAY, I got static and loosing control of my mouse randomly. Controler loss first started showing up with dx7, but only in a couple of programs and mostly only the one. Which ever controller I used in the game is the one that went south be it the joystick or Mouse. But with dx8, it's gotten worse. A lot worse along with static. What ever the problem is with SB cards, it's amplified by DirectDraw.
