Why exactly do I have to be sleep deprived?

I am dumbfounded right now. The more I think about this test, the more it confuses me. I am scheduled for an EEG tomorrow (part of a battery of tests to determine/rule out seizure for a recent health "issue"). Part of the preparation for this test is that I need to be sleep deprived.

Normally this wouldn't be much of an issue to be, but it makes no sense to me? Why sleep deprived? I will be getting a total of 2.5 hours of sleep tonight before the test.

Can anyone explain the necessity of this to me?

You're having a sleep EEG, as opposed to a normal EEG, I suspect. They will want you to fall asleep during the test. Best way to get you to sleep is to make sure you're real tired.

That being said, my diagnosis is that you'll probably die. Best case scenario is that you're sexually molested during the test.

If neither of the above come true, then I wish you good luck.

That could be why for the pre-screening they asked me for my next of kin, living will and denomination...

A sleep deprived EEG is done to increase the potential for epileptic waveforms to be detected that may not be appearant if you were well rested.

The next step may be intranasal probes if they believe that the study way indeterminate.

Next time ask the neurologist. Most are ass*oles but he may not be.

Although I often believe many peoples brains and anus are attached I doubt that a probe there will pick up any seizure activity.

That would've been my guess; sleep deprivation is going to put more stress on your brain than would normally be experienced, and since they're looking for seizure-like activity on the EEG, stress is exactly what they want.

Actually there looking for low serotonin levels but stress causes that as well.

Sleep deprived EEG

For some people, there is more chance of irregular brain activity happening when they are tired or when they are going to sleep. Having a sleep-deprived EEG might help.

This test is done in the same way as a normal EEG but the person goes to sleep during the test. To help the person sleep, they may be asked to stay awake some, or all, of the night before. In some cases a mild sedative might be given to help the person sleep.
