Dude, I just tripped upon this on cnn.com.... Now I see why DOOM 3 was delayed, and still taking so long. It seems he was busy working on trying to win a $10 Million prize on building a spaceship that can take 3 persons into space!

The X-Prize is financed by private donors. The list of supporters includes Dennis Tito, an American who spent $20 million to fly on a Russian craft as history's first space tourist, Erik Lindbergh, a pilot and grandson of Charles Lindbergh, former astronaut and U.S. Senator John Glenn, and movie actor Tom Hanks.
First USA Bank donated $1 million, as did the New Spirit of St. Louis Organization, a descendent of the group that sponsored the trans-Atlantic flight by Charles Lindbergh in 1927.

I wonder if you get to play his games in alpha or beta stages during the trip up there? :)

I think he says D3 is the last game he'll be working on to go on to "other pursuits." I guess he just wants to get off of this planet and discover a portal to hell in deep space only to open it unwittingly and trigger mass destruction of humanity where he will become our last stand for the survival of all...

First of all, Doom 3 was never delayed.

Second of all, this isn't the reason for any delay or things taking a long time. The engine was done long ago (John's job), it's just the game design that is taking place. There are only about a dozen or so employees at id, so it takes a while.

Doom 3 will suck anyway.
Blasphemy!

1. Carmack is the macdaddy of all
2. Doom3 will not suck (I hate you Skoorb!)
3. This won't be Carmack's last game, but it MAY be his second to last game.

Edit: He expressed that his last game was going to be a NON sequel in a recent interview. So not another quake, doom or wolfenstein. But, he wasn't fully sure whether that would even be his last game or not.

In all seriousness, I doubt we'll see two sucesful launches within the next 12 months. These private companies really don't have the ability to do test runs. I really doubt that their first prototype ships will survive intact a first launch, even if all their paper and designs are perfect. :( Launching a rocket is so incredibly complex....
