I don't mean westjet or southwest, I mean stuff like Ryan air and all the others operating in europe. If you wanna fly between Rome and London, its like 30 Euros. If I wanna fly Toronto Calgary, its like $300.

When you consider with the current airfare prices the airlines are still running at a loss, how could they get any cheaper?

you know in counterstrike, on a bombing map, when the counterterrorists don't buy enough guns/ammo/equipment, and lose the round, and the announcer goes "Terrorists win"?
It's kinda like that.

Because an hour flight in Europe can get you anywhere, and an Hour in the US can't get you out of california

Not entirely the case, they get some but not enough that the likes of BA bitch about being unfair. The reason they cost so much is the lack of anything with the flight, no food, no entertainment etc, is it worth it on a hour or so flight? Hell the cabin crew have to pay for their own accomodation. This tied in with the fact they generally service the lesser known airports than the primary ones means they can offer a cheap service. Keeping in mind that there is more to pay beyond the ticket price, such as airport tax, luggage tax (they'll hit you hard on this), where that is inclusive in the ticket price of larger airlines.

Given America's service oriented history, I'd doubt many would fly on planes without luxuries they are used to.

Southwest and ryanair/easyjet's model is short trips and high volume for high profit margins in cost/passenger miles. Canada did have jetsgo to compete with westjet. Didn't work as Jetsgo went out of business.

Part of the reason: The distance and population density of Toronto --> Calgary != Rome --> London.
