Why don't we have a Seperate Forum for Linux?

With the linux usage on the rise, how come we don't have a seperate Linux Forum?

Linux questions & answers are very different from Windows,
it would help to have a dedicated forum to search for common linux questions & solutions

You've got my vote.

Actually, why not a separate forum for each OS? Perhaps bunch 95 and 98 together, 2k and XP together, and so on.

Though you'll still probably see a lot of posts that could belong in either Software/Apps or an OS forum.

Here's a trivia question -- where do you post a question about power supplies? :)

First instinct is General Hardware, but then you've also got connections to Video and Processor to consider, certain PSUs required for certain CPUs/Video cards...

General Hardware or Cases\Cooling

As for the original topic?

I vote no. Programming being split off from software is a more worthy cause IMO.

Definitely.

There is no need for a Win9x and WinXP/2000 forum.

Then you would need one for Linux, and every flavor of Linux ;)

Don't forget an OSX forum..

One is enough.

Power supplies have no more to do with cases/cooling than another other hardware component. The only reason PSUs are often bunched with cases is because they come bundled together. With that logic, why not throw processors and motherboards in one forum?

Perhaps a separate forum for 95/98 and XP/2k is not the best idea. Upon further reflection, I think it would likely not fix anything and just create extra forums. People will still post totally uninformative topics and not provide proper information for others to use to answer their questions.

But I do think a Windows/Linux division may be effective...

Perhaps not now, but in the future, assuming Linux can effectively grow more popular among the mainstream.

True Linuxforum.org would be suffice, however, that is not the point.
I'm sure the same logic would direct me toward (NeoWin.Net, or MSFN) for all my WinXP quesitons.

I prefer just coming here to Anandtech for all my Tech-Related Q&A.
People are more MATURE than most other forums:

One critique I have with Linux Centric Forum is that they're rather Snooty and have this "Everything from Microsoft is Evil Attitude."
I don't care to engage in yet another Flame War between Microsoft vs. Linux,
nor am I looking forward having to defend my Intelligent everytimes I ask a stupid linux question.

Hardcore Linux Users (I call them nerds) tend to have this Inferiority / Superiority Complex, and lash out
@ every Linux Newbie for making Linux too MS-Like. Anyhow, I digressed.

I just thinks "at least" a seperate Linux Forum here @ anandtech would benefit everyone.

I like having a single forum for all. Besides, if there were separate forums for each OS, the Linux users would in the Linux forum all the time and likely wouldn't visit the Windows forums. Who would answer all the Windows posts then? :p

There are better and larger linux forums out there which are dedicated. Here it's just not worth it.

Who not just combine all of the forums related to computers into one? Just browse through a few pages of the posts in Operating Systems. People ask about motherboards, applications, harddrives, PCI cards, networking, etc.

How about skipping the 95/98 forum and declaring them dead, like should have happened 5 years ago.

Sounds like you're the one lashing out...

Guess what, there are plenty of elitist and snotty Windows users as well.
Try starting a Mac thread in general hardware for a good example.

Sometimes eye pollution can result from too many forums. An OS is an OS. It would possible be useful to have sub-forums where the usage dictates, i.e.,

Operating Systems
. . . Windows
. . . Linux
. . . Mac
. . . Other

The idea would be to minimize wading through pages of threads of no interest to find something of interest.

Just a thought.

I know that a lot of Linux users are elitists...and I'm sorry if you've had bad experiences because of that.

Each operating system has it's target audience....and it's usage.

As long as someone doesn't say "This operating system is better then this operating system", I'll be happy. If someone does, I'll be more then happy to point out all it's flaws.

moral of that point: every OS out there has pros and cons. No operating system is perfect.

Linux is better than DOS.
