Why don't they show popular shows like 24, Lost, etc. at the same time in every country?

I just don't get it, everyone talks about globalization but when it comes to something like that, we Swiss people can wait for about a year or two before they're aired. Why is that?

I understand that if a first season starts, it might or might not be successful but I think with established shows like The Simpons, 24 and Southpark, they could air them everywhere at the same time.

networks in different countries are run by different companies, for instance there is ALOT of good TV series we never get to see here in the US or if we do were a season behind

few that come to mind:

Dr Who (new seires)
Regenesis (Canadian Show)
Hex (not made anymore but was a cool show kinda along the lines of Buffy)
Spooks

the network that funds the show wants it to be the first with it which is the main reason it doens't show the same time overseas

Falloutboy: I think it wouldn't hurt the network that funds that show because the markets are totally isolated from each other IMO.

If you're a fortune teller you should invest in the stock market. But seriously, shows from foreign countries carry financial risks to the broadcaster who chooses to license it.

you would be surprised for instance if Stargate showed first in canada or UK I wouldn't even bother watching Sci-fi since its not HD or even Progressive scan I would just grab rips off usenet

As I said, the first season doesn't have to show at the same time but for example "The Simpsons", that's no financial risk at all. Also for a show like 24 in it's 5th season. The show is very popular in Switzerland so... I just don't get it :D
