Why don't they move voting online?

First money is probably the most valued thing anyone has...many entirely run their financials solely online.

We don't have mass hysteria and people stealing each others funds.

They should do this with voting. Put up each issue and let the people vote how they want.

IMHO things like the electoral college and the like have run their stay.

I don't think you'd have anymore 'vote' buying then already and buying individual votes is not so helpful anyway anymore.

I think it would show a more popular vote.

I can only begin to imagine the security problems and opportunities for electoral fraud that universal on-line voting would present. Individual vote buying and the Republican bugaboo of individual voter fraud pale before the massive hacking window opened if the vote count were exposed over the internet.

I think it can work... but people would be too scared to trust it... I mean you get some of the great minds of IT together and I'm sure it will be even more secure than anything banks do....

But this would mean more people would vote which would mean democrats would always win... as per CNN "62% of newly registered voters are Democrats"

Is this what you really want??? If Democrats kept winning, who would take away our rights to choose, our right to privacy and our right to have an Executive branch that doesn't make us look like a bunch of bumbling Idiots!

I can agree...it's all recounts everyday for thousands to 100's of thousands of dollars.

I will also agree lobbyists would kill this idea.

I have an even better idea... why not let people phone in their vote, like American Idol? Don't even worry about fraud-- just let people vote as many times as they want-- those who want it more will vote more often. I mean, if it works for American Idol, it should work for the US Presidency, right?

WTF? how is an online banking comparison = to phone in votes?

Why, we already have voting fraud at the poll. See Florida. Oh you're not a white republican? Delete ballot.

Excellent... Obama would wasily win then... Obama's highest percentage group , the young have a much stronger pension to spam things like that than the old geysers, bigots, hicks, and backward thinking people that vote republican.

So you have one 'bad' election. I am sure the next would be proper.

Because switching to online voting would require the govt to purchase a computer and internet access for everyone or else it would establish a de facto poll tax.

Why not current polling places setup with online counts/reports?

Sort of a middle ground without costing the voter a computer and data line.

Oregon's system of vote by mail with physical ballot drop-off sites (mostly public libraries, but you can still put a stamp on it and mail it back if you want too, so long as it gets back on time) seems to work best for what the OP is looking for, with no 'poll tax' worries.

The beauty of vote by mail IMO is no physical address no ballot. Plus it leaves a complete paper trail. And there is IMO nothing like voting from the convenience and privacy of your own home, with plenty of time to study all the candidates and issues. I think the biggest complaint of VBM though is how it has undermined the whole Election Day tradition.

Because in an election between Obama and McCain, the winner by a landslide would be Ron Paul.

Anything programmed by man, can be hacked/cracked by another greater man who has enough jolt cola in his system to keep him up for a few days. I believe E-Voting will be as secure as Microsoft Windows activation scheme, or movie encryption schemes, or the DRM found on some video games.

and you don't think the banking system is getting hacked day in and day out? Yeah, it's reasonably secure but, if it gets hacked your money is still somewhat safe.

I mean they can't even get the electronic voting machines to work right and you expect them to get it right over a network?

an electronic machine is different than your computer running an application.

Somehow, I cannot view disenfranchisement of the homeless as a beautiful thing.

Lose your job, lose your home, lose your vote.
Do you seriously have no problem with that?
