The Packared Bell remote BBD is refering to

(I've been looking for this myself, as I just bought a DVD Drive and would like some sort of remote)

BBD, can you setup macros for this remote, so you could shut down windows from afar? I had an Interact one (no win2k drivers :( ) that you could, it even had a trackball for mouse control.

Yeah you can - the PB Remote has a Circular Pad on it that you can use to control the mouse. It works really well, but the remotes are NOT made very well and don't take much of a beating.

Luckily, I used to work at Best Buy and have quite a few of these in a box in my closet. :)

I wondered what that big button was for, kind of assumed it was for mouse control.

I shouldn't be using this one too much. I want something I can start, stop, navigate DVDs with from bed, and when I'm finished, shut down the PC.

What I rerally need is a "sleep timer" for the PC, cause it's a little on the loud side to sleep with it on. Although I'm getting used to it.

Cool thread. My friend had been asking me about something like this...for months! Heh, well, looks like I'll finally have an answer (I'd forget about it 5 minutes after he'd ask me each time ).

I think I'm gonna get one myself too!

Where does one find an IR port to interact with this remote and how much could I expect the entire package (controller/port/software) to cost?

I've been remote controlling WinAmp for about a year now!

I'm using the IRMan. It has a lot of other uses as well. There is a plugin for Winamp. You just use any remote you want and you program the plugin to "learn" the Winamp controls. I use a universal remote.

BTW, this is my first post here in a couple years! Junior member!? Bah! I registered back in '97!

yeah, you can, there is a menu key, you can make that your start menu key, and then hit up enter.

run a search on here (i think its in the hot deals forum) and you get all the software you need for this, and will work with almost any application.

starting to love PB remote again

You don't have to use the remote supplied with the Packard Bell receiver. You can use any remote and "learn" the signals with a program called winlirc.

Or you can check this site www.lirc.org and download the config file for winlirc to use to identify a different remote :D

also the PB remote works in win 95/98/ME/NT/2K...it's great! ;)

Hi. To disclose, I'm the guy who sells the PB Remote on my personal page at mindspring.com. As some of you stated, the remote you get with the Packard Bell can be switched for any one. I am currently using the JVC remote to control PowerDVD. Program the "keystrokes" to the remote via WIRC. It takes some time, but its a one time deal. WIRC also has native support for Creative and another DVD player in their 1.61 build.

A FREE PROGRAM you can look into is WinLIRC. This lets you control WinAmp very easily. You can also interface two other free programs, Girder and IRAssistant, to completely control your PC.

Shutting down the PC is easy with a RunDLL32 command. You can do a search on google "rundll32 shutdown". Map the command to a remote button and you can shutdown your computer from your bed! :)
