Why don't they just have a new nationwide election?

I understand there are countless issues that make this all but an impossibility, but if EVERYONE gets a chance to vote on equal ballots(not defective? Florida ballots), then wouldn't it be a fair (and less contravercial/pathetic) election?

Just like Superman's father said to Superman in Superman the Movie, you cannot interfere with human history. The constitution calls for one election, no more no less. It happens at a certain place and time, runs by standards everyone agrees on before votes are cast, and must be finished by a deadline. Anything else amounts to tyranny.

you just can't, thats why. its unconstitutional. you can't just make exceptions to the constitution, or the whole thing instantly loses its validity. talk about a crisis

It would not be fair either way they did it. You cannot have a vote and allow the people who did not turn out the first time to have a say now, they should not have a chance after they threw away the first one. But it would be against the Constitution to have a vote, and only limit it to certain people. Either way, you cannot win.

come on, you're really not that naive, are you? A new election? Hell, why don't we have an election every day then, or better yet, a continuous election?

i don't like the fact that Tennessee lost the Super Bowl last year. by your reasoning, because referees might have made mistakes, we ought to replay that game too, since it wasn't 'fair.'

This isn't tiddlywinks we're talking about here. Politics is all about hardball, and whining that it wasn't "fair" is absurdly naive.

Besides the Constitutional issues, we'd probably have to go through this whole thing again. The voting method is on a county by county basis. There's no way most counties can change over to a more reliable voting method in time for a national revote, let alone do it in four years for the next presidential election. I guess the next candidates will just have to kick some major booty for a landslide.

Feisters,

You know I wonder if a certain partisan political group might seek to keep the flawed, inaccurate system as-is. After all, they're having quite a Gay Olde Time subverting the results in a certain state called Florida. Why aim for accuracy when Just In Time Election Results suit you better?

Point taken. But I would be amazed if there wasn't a bipartisan call for a revamp of the voting process. Economics plays the largest role however; each county has to finance their own election. Many rural counties would not be able to afford "modern" polls. It would seem to me though, a place like Miami-Dade County could afford electronic voting. Mmmm. . .

[edit] Of course the smaller counties aren't having these problems. At least on this scale. [/edit]

P.S. JellyBaby, I just noticed your signature. Are you into astronomy?

Feisters,

I hope something is done to speed along the slow evolution of improvement in our voting process. Anything short of federal interference is groovy by me. Obviously, FL should be gone over with a fine-tooth comb, the results rechecked (then checked again). Screwy state, FL. I'm also for same-day registration in every state, the ability to freely cast a vote without your party affiliation interfering, and even socializing the financing presidential elections (yeah, a bit scary).

As for astronomy, I used to dabble, yes. At night, there was a time I could point out most constellations to you. In my younger days I spent many a night outdoors with my scope scanning the heavens. Had a subscription to the Planetary Society and OMNI and I've read a few books on the hobby. Enjoyed a few classes in college, too and the exhibits in the planetarium. I plan to update my sig regularly with new and exciting deep space objects for the enjoyment of all AT members. :)
