MTV has sucked since Rap and the ghetto thugs took it over
Dude, mainstream media as a whole has sucked since Rap and the ghetto thugs took it over. Glorifying the ghetto has been the downfall of America. Drug use goes up, violence goes up, irresponsible sex goes up, nihilism goes up. And all the while, people keep saying, that it's the parent's fault not, what is shoved down everyone's throat 24/7. What is a parent to do, lock their kid away in a bubble? This rap/ghetto crap is goddamned everywhere.
Although I had a roommate who seemed to suffer from some kind of weird psychological disorder where he felt Tupac Shakur's raps actually applied to his white Connecticut ass, rap as a whole is not about glorifying the ghetto. Yes, some rappers do that sort of thug crap, but it's not everybody, and that's not what rap's about.
And anyway, why all the hating? =p
Also, I think many people fail to realize that for some people who have very little, rap gives them something you might not realize, it gives em hope, and sometimes it even gives them the drive to make something of themselves so they can have the nice stuff the rappers have.
I mean, if you're white you have the mega-billionaires CEOs to look up to as your successful examples, but to be honest, if you're black and from the ghetto, who are you gonna look up to as someone who made it starting where you are? Rappers give people something to strive for, and although I don't really think that's what people should be striving for, nonetheless it gives them something, anything. And there's also the hip-hop culture spawned CEOs like the CEOs of hip hop clothing labels(FUBU, Phat Pharm, etc.). And those people they can aspire to be.
So quit the dissing on rap. If you want to blame rap for everything, why aren't you blaming the idiotic metal bands that scream just as stupid stuff as some of the worst gangsta rap?
Because I'm SOOO sure that listening to Slipknot's "Wait and Bleed" is very educational for our children too.
It's just easy to pick on rap because "those" people happen to have a different skin color. Typical. What about the non-gangsta rap groups that try to make positive statements and set good role models for the ghetto? They exist you know. And even on occasion gangsta rappers give some good role modeling songs too.
For example, take Nas' "I Know I Can" which is set to Fur Elise! It's more inspirational than ANY fricking rock song I've heard over the last 10 years. But no, you won't point that out and go wow, how awesome. Sure you just blame all the BAD things on "those" black people.
Sheesh.
And no, I'm not black, but it disgusts me to hear all these people down about rap as if it's some primitive form of music that an inferior race made or something. If anything, rap is the modern equivalent of Poetry. There used to be a time when people read poetry for entertainment(haha yeah those days), but that's obviously not really all that popular these days. But I think rap is probably a pretty logical modern version of poetry. It expresses the same things poetry has expressed, although most times not as eloquently, but sometimes JUST as eloquently.
And finally, as one reporter/movie critic said, watching 8 Mile finally let him "get it" although he had hated rap all his life. So if you haven't seen it, go see it, particularly since it's a damned good movie.
