Both smart covers and flip covers on a phone are stupid.
A smart/flip cover doesn't automatically offer any more protection than a TPU case with glass screen protector combo. If anything, it offers less.

The problem with flip covers is that they don't stay closed. I know there are a few "magnetic" ones out there, but you're just as likely to drop the phone while prying the flap open, causing it to land glass-first and shatter.

Cases are always going to be a trade-off between using your device unhindered and offering protection. It seems counter-productive to put extra layers over the screen while manufacturers work hard to eliminate layers.

My parents like them on their S4's. They show it off to their friends. XD

I personally wouldn't mind one if its volume (mass and weight) is minimal. I don't want to apply screen protectors if at all possible, and flip covers can provide protection for Gorilla Glass from scratches. I really like the smoothness and smudge-resistance provided by Gorilla Glass' oleophobic coating.

I don't know why oleophobic coating doesn't see more widespread use. Seems like such a great way to keep devices' outer aging to minimum. I would like to hear from chemist/engineer of its drawbacks and whatnot.
