I can't imagine you could get the same speed and precision with a controller that you can get with a mouse when it comes to strategy games.

With that being said Starcraft was made for the Nintendo 64.

i'd think control is the main issue. i also think that people who want to play stategy games already do so on pc so the market for them on console would be very weak.

C&C3 came out for the 360 and RA3 came out for PS360 (lame that the PS3 version didn't support KB&M).

Halo Wars too. Bungie didn't do it though which was sad because Bungie has a history with RTS games with Myth The Fallen Lords.

Do you eat soup with a knife?

Why not? Because a spoon is available.

The first strategy (RTS) was on the genesis.. Herzog Zwei, is consider the "original" RTS game, DUNE 2 is consider the first to put all the pieces in what is considers the traditional RTS of today. mnay of the old ones where on consoles.. but much as Sulaco says.. they simply don't translate well to a controller. its my understanding they don't sell well either. Arnt the Supreme Commander RTS on consoles?

For turn-based tactical there is Valkyria Chronicles and now XCom.

RTS just works better with KB + mouse, and other strategy genres like space 4X and wargames are too small of a market for a big console release.

Real time strategy games are best played with a mouse and keyboard. Controller is just too clunky. Not that there aren't strategy games for console. It works well enough for turn based built on a grid system. The Disgaea series is a great turn based, tactical RPG.

The PS3 supports keyboard and mouse use with any game. Sony made it possible, developers are the problem. Nobody wants to make the games because they haven't historically sold well. Don't ever expect that to change.

That's part of it. Though you have to also keep in mind that consoles are usually played from the couch in people's living rooms. Nobody's going to prop a keyboard on their lap or TV tray for a little RTS action.

There is one modern console that I do think it could work, and that's the Wii U. While still lacking compared to K&M, tablets are a fair bit better for RTS games than a controller. The iPad has a few good strategy titles.

Spoons dont cost hundreds of dollars!!!

All the modern consoles cost hundreds of dollars.

Anyway, the point is, if you're going to release a strategy game, by and large, it makes VASTLY, VASTLY more sense to do so on a PC, where the control scheme is INFINITELY better suited.

They tried RTS in consoles in the past. It was a complete failure.

If they replaced the thumb sticks with track balls, we might seem some PC quality FPS/RTS controls instead of this "hold and wait" BS that plagues analog stick based games.

I don't understand why people keep bringing up control schemes. You have been able to use keyboard and mouse on ps3 anytime. The controls are not the issue at all.

false.

sony allows devs to code to allow to use a keyboard, but you can't simply use any old keyboard to control any old ps3 game.

Halo Wars anyone? I mean...it worked, but I'd rather play Age of Empires 1. You know, before Rise of Rome. Back when you didn't even have a build queue for units.

Consoles just don't do RTSes. Too much going on at once. Also, I think RTSes are more niche these days...kinda like space sims like Freelancer are (though not AS bad), and the demographic that plays RTSes will already be playing them on a PC. But that's just a guess on my end.

Sure they are.

1) How many people honestly know they can use a keyboard/mouse with the PS3? Very few, which means a game would have to advertise the shit out of that ability, and rely on its consumer base to follow through.

2) Even if you did, face it, how many consoles are set up to take advantage of a keyboard/mouse setup physically? Virtually none. Most are in entertainment centers, in living rooms, played on couches/recliners; not easily conducive to effective keyboard/mouse control. And people are lazy, likely not going to modify their console placement/routine for one game.

If you're a developer looking to release what is likely to be a niche sales game anyway, everything about the PC blows a console out of the water in that equation, as it's already setup for it.

even the 360 had a doggle that lets you add a mouse /KB its amazing with some tweeking (dont even think its close to a M/KB on a pc, its not) how you can own console gamepad players on some games. Non stop "hacker" comments. I love FPS and sadly my age has somehow told my reflexes they are getting no more love and will not improve, but actually get worse as i age.. on the PC where its equal footing (M/KB) i can pretty much hold my own, but never dominate.. on the 360 with a K/M (dongle) and far to much tweeking.. i feel like the old days.. its sorta like driving a MECH.. in PC games you turn left, its a mater of how fast you move the mouse.. on 360.. dont matter how fast, it only goes as fast as the game allowed.. (like a delay sort of) but the mouse eliminates my "fook, i cant get my up down targeting skills , left right.. no problem,, but im shooting the ground in front of him, damn now im shooting over him"

not many places selling um nowdays, market was not there i guess. XIM still makes one i think.. there where a few others (better) but you can only find um on EBAY nowadays.

but that wont help you with RTS games that are not made...

Ya, it is fun when you use get to use non standard stuff and destroy all the noobs using the controls the system came with.
