Well FM radio works just fine on most phones. All HTC phones seem to have it, the LG G2, Optimus G, etc. Samsung only removed it in the GS4.

That's why I've said the US really isn't aware of this because somehow the carriers strip it out or the US specific versions lack FM radio. So yeah, it's not a big loss, but to me if they've been doing it in other international phones before, why not continue?

Worst part is (as the rumor goes) that it is included in the chipset, but per Verizon they simply didn't bother to connect the headphone jack to the system. So a tiny trace on the PCB, probably saving them $0.0000000000000001 cents per device, and voila, no radio.

Verizon D:

My Lumia 822 has the radio feature. It was enabled in the latest update. You have to use headphones since it uses the wire as the FM antenna.

Putting an antenna in the phone would take up a lot of space, especially for AM. Most people just don't care enough to make it a big selling point.

Many of our devices have a built-in FM-radio which uses the headset cable as antenna

With other phones you have to use a wired headset which acts as a FM radio antenna. You have still the option to listen to the radio via headset or loudspeaker.

It did as I remember using FM radio on my old LG Thrill 4G. Samsung had FM radio app on their Galaxy S series up to S3 , I believe. Samsung Galaxy player does have functioning FM app.

Reread the bolded text you quoted, then read this:

And yes, some OEM's still provide an FM radio app as the SoC supports it. They just had to write custom code to do so.

Yeah, but they specifically did not include it in the "flagship" 928. Because Verizon likes to troll their customers.

(unfortunately I am so grandfathered in with a legacy family plan, employee discount, unlimited data, text plan etc...and their coverage...I won't be switching anytime soon) (shakes fist in rage)

I hate the radio, all they do is play the same list of songs over and over and over. I get tired of listening to Welcome to the jungle by GNR for example, I mean they made some music since that album, jeez.

One of the sacrifices I had to make when I purchased a Nexus phone.

I do have a Sansa with an FM tuner, but using it isolates me somewhat from notifications on my phone, which would be played through my headset if my phone had FM support.

This was actually one of the things that always bothered me about iPods, as well.

As others have mentioned, radio has uses far beyond music.

^Well one would assume that someone is smart enough to have an actual radio, batteries, flashlights..etc in case of emergency. I have several radio's in my house and garage and battery powered small one in the car for that purpose. But like I said, FM in general is terrible but relying on your cell phone alone for listening to news..etc probably isn't the best option but some people are charge freaks, I keep mine off so I don't have to charge it.

Radio is probably the last thing I would ever think about when comparing smartphones, quite honestly.

The whole point of a mobile device is that it's always with you - for example when you're away from home. The storm that hit us earlier this summer killed power throughout the city, right at the beginning of the evening commute. A lot of people were stuck downtown without cell service, and FM radio was the only way to get information.
