Why don't people who stink realize how TERRIBLE they smell?!?

It's a well known fact that people acclimatize to smells. A rose that smells good in front of your face will in short order not really smell much at all. Similarly a lump of poo on your desk will eventually illicit no reaction to you - indeed, it may become even somewhat likable. This is part of the reason, though not the entire reason, why people love the smell of their own flatulence.
