They're not bad, they just freak you out at night when what looks like a massive rat, isn't. But it still looks like a huge ass rat, a bit unnerving.

You people do realize that he is talking about the Australian Possum which is VERY different from the OPOSSUM we have in North America? They are nothing alike and the ones Down Under are kind of cute.

The North American Opossum is basically an ugly nocturnal ratlike creature but they are absolutely harmless so no one should really worry about them.

I had to evict an opossum from my neighbor's garage one time who had wedged himself behind her washer and dryer. Through a combination of rope and broom I was able to get him into a garbage can and release him into the woods. When I got the rope loop around his chest he started hissing and hollering and baring his teeth - my kids were scarred for life.

Then there was the time when my four year old was walking over to my neighbor's house in the dark and came back screaming, "there are monkeys on her deck!" Two opossums were on her deck railing eating the birdseed.

Years ago we put the cat food in a paper canister (the type used in food service). Opening the lid and there was a big fat possum in it -- and hissed worse than a cat!

Raccoons would come also if they're hungry (and they're the dangerous ones, as the can carry rabies).
