exactly. just because I have the right of way when crossing the street doesn't mean I'm going to take my sweet ass time.

when I cross the street and a car is polite enough to slow down and let me cross, i give them a polite wave and cross quickly so I don't hold them up.

YES I agree Blanco, YOU had better be running if you happen to be in front of my car when I am driving it.

:music:Dumb dumb dumb dumb dumb.:music:

This topic is so wrong on so many levels.

I find it absolutely unnecessary. If I'm in the cross-walk, I'm the cock-of-the-walk on the road.

I too have one of these mystical creatures, and I can assure you, they cannot be trained. They are not unlike cats.

Spraying them with water seems to work. Not sure how to train a cat though.

There's this spot at my college campus that has a crosswalk crossing a 4 lane road not at a light so, naturally, every student takes that way. It's not uncommon that I sit there and watch 10-15 minutes worth of continuous pedestrian traffic on this crosswalk holding up 30-40 cars on this 4 LANE ROAD because they're too lazy to walk 1/3rd of a block up to the light and cross there. I regularly let cars go there if I have to cross at the crosswalk, but the people behind me just keep on walking like the ignorant SOB's they are.

I'm with ya 100%.

Yeah sometimes I wonder about the uncontested crosswalks in big cities. People can just continuously walk for that long and cars have to wait more than 10 minute? Insane.

Is running that huge of a burden? Are people that lazy/out of shape?

I ALWAYS run/jog across crosswalks and parking lots. It's polite. I suggest everyone else do the same, unless something is holding them back.

If the car stops politely, I pick up a trot...not blindingly quick, but fast enough for them to know I care.

Now, if the car screeches to a stop a few feet away from me...I'll be much more likely to take my time

I will chime in and say I agree.

It takes me about 1/10 of a second to zoom by you. I stop out of courtesy, the least you can do is walk briskly in a straight line in front of me and wave.

Why can't the driver be courteous and let the pedestrian walk?

I always move quickly across crosswalks.... that being said.

Wait until some asshole driver tries to pull a quick right or left in front of you when you are pushing your son/daughter in their stroller comes within a foot or two of hitting the stroller. That will positively make your blood boil.

You mean his quaint notion of not being an asshole? Only on Anandtech would people make fun of someone for being polite.

I subscribe to the noninterference school of thought when it comes to traffic. Anything I do should be calculated to have the minimal impact on the flow of traffic. If I change lanes, I do so with plenty of space around me. If I'm merging onto the freeway, I speed up to match the flow of traffic. If I'm making a turn, I put on my blinker BEFORE slowing down, so as to give people a chance to get around me. And when I'm walking across the street, I do so briskly, and will time things to keep people waiting as little as possible. For example, at a stop sign, if there's a car already stopped, I'll cross BEHIND them, so that they don't have to wait for me to go through the intersection. The car behind them would have had to stop anyway, so there's little to no delay.

I'm not going to run across the street in a custom suit. I hate running in dress shoes also. I don't mind walking briskly though.

Exactly. If only more people did that. Just today on the way home from work I had to merge onto the interstate (semis going at least 70 MPH in 2 of the 3 lanes) in a parade of traffic going 50 MPH behind a moron. It's great trying to get out of the slow lane when the lane next to you is full of traffic going at least 20 MPH faster. And I have a car that is rather slow to accelerate.

Yeah, that one. It's funny how you have the sole legal and ethical power yet you willingly abdicate it. What you consider "an asshole" I consider to be a "living sentient being."

But, I suppose for every Aristotle there needs to be an equal but opposite idiot.

EDIT: I'd encourage one with a submissive personality IRL to be more assertive, as well. It builds character.

Well, I'll walk briskly. But there are a bunch of ignorant drivers out there and I am going to take into account their stupidity every time I put myslef on the road. I am not going to run so you can keep your foot off the brake only to fall on my face and have you run over me.

I'm going to get some acknowledgment as I walk across. So, I want people to hit the break, slow down and remember it could be their family out on that crosswalk.

It's not often that someone will willingly acknowledge that they are an idiot. I applaud you for it.

It's not about being submissive or assertive. If I can benefit another person through no inconvenience to myself*, I will do it. It is common courtesy. You seem to pride yourself on doing the opposite, which I have to say is pretty pathetic.

* I do not consider walking briskly to be an inconvenience to an able-bodied person.

I have this innate ability to get pedestrians to run. Unfortunately, usually by then, it's too late.

The whole driver/pedestrian thing is so much give and take (as is driving on the road in general). There is a necessary balance, in my not-so-humble opionion, that you have to shoot for.

I do appreciate if someone picks it up a little, if only to get out of the crosswalk a little sooner. Granted, it's not a big deal, but I appreciate. Oftentimes I'll walk a little brisker, particularly in areas where cars can be stuck trying to take a turn because a near endless stream of stragglers piddle into and out of the crosswalk. If a few them would speed up (or even slow down), there might be an opportunity to get a car or two through.

One thing that annoys me is when some poor sap (or ass) gets stuck in the middle of the intersection. The signal changes, traffic going the other way is halted. Now, the guy -could- pull into another lane to get out of the intersection, but no, the pedestrians stream out, blocking any escape route. They -could- just hold off for a few seconds, let the guy get out of the way, but nope, they weave through the cars with a bizarre sense of indifference or something. It's this endless game of "not MY problem".

Plenty of pet peeves with drivers, as well, though. And I'm sure I exhibit a handful (at least) of behaviors that draw the ire of drivers and walkers alike.

Pedestrians have the right of way, and I gladly give it to them (as if it was mine to give in the first place. Ha.). I ask for a little bit of awareness in return ;)

i can see you point when someone is taking their sweet ass time saunterign across walking slower than normal..

but for you to be a tool and expect them to hustle and walk faster than normal..because you will be thrown off your schedule well then eff you you effing douchebag

i hope you get caught on one of those pedestrian crosswalk stings.....

by the way you know your are not legally allowed to enter and cross the crosswalk with your car until the pedestrain has stepped onto the sidewalk right...

It is a matter of common courtesy. I walk briskly or even jog across the street when cars are waiting. I also get up and go in my car when other cars are waiting at stop lights. I try to get going no matter if I am walking, driving, waiting in line or whatever. I would expect the same from others although that is rarely the case. It never ceased to amaze me when I was in college how many people would walk out in an intersection and seemingly 'challenge' cars as if to say go ahead and hit me. I have the right of way, I can walk whenever I feel like it. I'll just sue you. Common sense should have prevailed and said that car big, person small. Collision make big mess, cause big pain. But that was ususally not the case.
