Hello GUYS,i just out of curiosity want to know Why does Nvidia and AMD just do research on gpu chipset?why they dont make their cards themselves?why they lend their chipsets to gigabyte, asus, msi, xfx to make cards? Why dont they give processors to other brands to sell like gpu? BYE

Same reason why Gigabyte, Asus, MSI, XFX, etc don't design GPUs of their own.

I'd imagine it's not a worthy investment to put money into the creation of manufacturing plants just to produce cards which might as well be done by companies who already have capital invested in manufacturing of PCBs and other integrated circuits. AMD and nVidia DO produce a reference specification, however, but like I stated previously, they don't produce the cards because it isn't worth it from a financial point of view. In other words, AMD and nVidia specialize in the design while your third-party companies specialize in the manufacturing. It's more efficient to specialize so they don't dabble in each others field of expertise.

ATI used to make its own cards.

And AMD and NVIDIA "do" the reference cards.

I guess this way there is a bigger variety of cards, coolers, etc, that will fit different niches without AMD and NVIDIA having to invest loads of money for little profit.

There are OEM card from both companies. I am not sure it those are 100% made by them, or part is outsourced, but you can find nv/amd branded cards.

That is the topic I wanted to touch aswell. Maybe not the whole card manufacturing process, but I would like to focus on coolers.
Nvidia put a lot of effort to design their new "titan" cooler. It required some investment in it. Amd goes along with their old design. Both companies are designing integrated circuits, coolers - not so much.

The question is: Will amd/nvidia outsource reference cooler designing to their board partners?

Both manufacturers have plenty of board partners, some of them exclusive to one manufacturer. There are some companies that are treated better than others, like evga is by nvidia, or sapphire (his? not sure) by amd. These board partners are known for their very efficient designs. Nvidia and AMD can safely give a task to design and manufacture reference coolers to those partners.

AMD is behind when it comes to reference cooler design. I wouldn't be surprised if they take this approach in the future.

Because foundry's are expensive and the companies that do have them build for any paying customer to keep them in business.

How many of these AIBs assemble their own boards versus having them assembled by someone like Foxconn?

Most of them do but I know Diamond does not. They use Powercolor (TUL Corporation)

AMD and Nvidia don't sell their own cards because they don't want to get involved in the support end of things. That is better served by an AIB partner.
