My house was built in 2001 as well, and it has one in every room (running off house electricity).

Built in smoke and CO2 detectors were built into our house. They run on electricity and a battery backup, and test themselves twice a year (which scares the hell out of you). Our house was built in 2005, so not sure what you're talking about.

I think its pretty much required. We did an addition on our home and had to have them installed into the addition.
No idea where OP gets his info.

Hard wired? If a smoke detector gets it power from the electrical system and a fire takes out power before the smoke detector goes off it would be useless. Granted that would probably be an exceedingly rare occurrence but still.

A better question would be why don't homes have a fire suppression sprinkler systems. My brother had I house that had such a system. Wouldn't that be better than built in smoke detectors?

I don't think you are paying attention...building code requires them.

What do the OP mean by older homes? The smoke detector as we know currently know it wasn't even invented until the 1960's, and most homes didn't have one until the mid-1970's...

Probably expensive.
