Why don't my display preferences load?

I am running WinXP on a Dell I8200 with a Geforce4 GO vidcard and I am using the nvidia reference drivers that were sent with this laptop. When I go to the color correction tab, in the display properties control panel, and adjust the gamma setness, the new setting won't load when I reboot windows. I have the box checked to apply my settings on start up, but this isn't happening. In some cases, the new display settings will load, but then go back to the defaults when I open a program. Any suggestions?
