Why dont mp3 players come with AM tuners?

I have seen the occasional mp3 player with FM radio capabilities, but never with AM. Is there a specific reason for this? I would love to have a device about the size of a Rio Nitrus that has 4GB of storage and AM/FM tuner built in. I believe I would pay a pretty penny for such a toy.

Yeah it sucks.

My iRiver MP3 CD player has an FM tuner, but no AM.

My Leadtek Winfast TV tuner card has an FM tuner, but no AM. 🙁

I have no desire to listen to FM radio, its like getting one of those "Now This is What I Call Music! #XXVII" CD's and putting it on repeat. I am addicted to the "John London Not Just Sports" radio show on KNBR 680 and I can't listen to it in the morning on my route or at the gym.

Yarrr!

I agree. FM radio, for the most part, sucks. If I listen to the radio, I listen to sports radio. I can't listen to FM DJs.

AM requires a different type of antenna than FM and it is much more bulky. FM can use any handy wire as an antenna, but AM requires a loop.

I agree that it sucks, but I can understand why it isn't there...

Is it just phycially impossible or impractical?

Ah yeah, makes sense! You would end up having to wear the antenna as a neckchain.

I think my old AIWA walkman has AM and it doesn't have anything special for an antenna.

I just bought a portable cd player w/ mp3 support for my cousin as x'mas gift,
and that one has both am and fm tuner build in...

Can't remember the exact model...I think it's Panasonic SV550 or something like that...

the lower teh frequency the larger the antenna you need., AM would require a much larger antenna, FM transmits at higher frequencies that use smaller antennas
