Why don't media outlets *really* show the carnage from terror and war?

I've always been curious, why do media outlets (or others) show the real carnage from horrific events? I know it's unpleasant, and sometimes out of respect for those involved and their families, but I have a rant.

I have seen first hand things of very dramatic proportions, and while unpleasant they have helped me form a reasonable opinion about them. My fear is that omissions cleanse, sanitize and otherwise desensitize people about such things.

I've always been curious about the world trade center, and how that was sanitized. Is that out of respect for those left behind? Do we do a disservice to ourselves but not showing the true horror of such events?

What is the real reasoning?

Sometimes it's just to graphic for some people to handle? I would think that they really wouldn't want to show people in fear of what they might do or think.

Because that might offend some people, and their ratings would go down as a result.
That would explain some outlets, but as far as I can tell it's simply a 100% across the board barrier...

They could always pull the old Sportscenter warning that the nexy clip is very graphic. Of course, before they were finished with that sentence, you'd see some guys bone sticking out of his shin or his elbow bent the wrong way or something like that, so it really was useless.

Has anyone seen any supposedly "banned" media online for the WTC? I've seen people jumping out of buildings, thats about it though.

If you grew up during the Vietnam era, you'd be damned happy your kids won't be subjected to this. Why stop at war and terrorism? Why not show the results of driving drunk or not wearing a seatbelt. That would certainly "sensitize" people to these issues too, no?

I'm all for it- that's reality, why hide it or pretend that life is somehow a more civil journey?

Get a clue! You ought to hear the Pro Choice clowns in here go ape when you post even diagrams of partial birth abortions, let alone "reality"!

Not much chance of selling hamburger helper after seeing ground up human on tv.

Of course Band-aid commercials might perform well.

A few moments looking at the car accidents at Rotten.com will make you realize that reality is far to horrible to subject everyone to unnecessarily.
