Why don't gas stations have sales?

Wouldn't it draw tons of business to drop the price of gas 4-5 cents for say, one day only? Or are they not allowed to do this for some reason...

They do occasionally around here. Sometimes they have gas wars, where 2 or 3 stations by each other will spend the whole day beating each other's rates. By the end of the day its crazy cheap.

There is a gas station near me that occasionaly waits a day to raise prices, but that's not quite the same thing. They get HUGE lines of cars waiting all day to get gas...it's insane.

Hmm.. I've never seen anything like that around here. I for once want to see "SALE" in big letters, and balloons all over. oh well...

A station by me drops the prices of their higher grades by like 6 cents on tuesdays. Gas prices are weird though - they change every couple of days. So it doesn't really make sense to have a "sale" when the daily fluctuation is so significant.

Yeah... a while back I remember somebody telling me that a gas station around here didn't raise prices with the rest of them, and they had crazy huge lines... and for some reason they were forced to raise prices... I don't know why :Q

That's always boggled my mind too. Maybe one day I'll go ask people :D

Eh.. It's probably brand loyalty. If you ask, they'll probably say they are paying extra for the "quality"

No way - you guys aren't factoring in the value of time to a person. Say it's your typical Civic or Camry which will eat up 15 gallons. That's just 90 CENTS. I mean, is it truly worth waiting an extra 20 minutes to save a buck or two? (haha Dial 1800-C-O-L-L-E-C-T)

Anyways - if you would like to save and not waste time, just purchase gas at night before or after going out.

sometimes ya gotta drive around for a bit to find the good prices..
i was only at 1/4 tank, so didnt really need gas just this minute... but i passed a station with Regular for $1.49.. all the other stations around here are $1.55 or higher.. so i got it...

sometimes when you're not looking for good prices.. you find it.

They have sales in my city.

A Sunoco down the street has one every week. They have banners saying GAS SALE. The sale is that you get all 3 grades for the price of the lowest grade every weekend. It has been like that for years now.

Yesterday WEBN radio said if you went to X location and had a WEBN sticker on your car they would buy your gas.

If you keep a collection of clothes for a year it will be hopelessly outdated. If you keep furniture a few years no one will want it anymore. If you keep food long it spoils. If you keep gasoline for a year you can still sell it.

Most consumer goods are things that people really don't need right away. So a sale tips the people over the edge and they buy the crap. People need gas so why are companies gonna lose money on a product that consumers will pay whatever is asked of them.

The reason why gas stations don't have sales on gas is that thier prices are very liquid, they can change it by the hour. Occasionally they get with radio stations and sell it for the amount that the radio station's number is. (ie: $0.98 for 98.5 FM)

There's one in the town I work in that has Premium for the price of low grade Wed-Fri. Since my car must have premium, I'm guaranteed to be there!

I have zero gas station loyalty. If texaco is cheaper one day (it never is, and so I've only bought gas there once in my life) I'll go there. If shell is cheaper (never is, so I only buy when it's the only station on the road) I'll buy there. If crown or race trac or BP are cheaper (whoo hoo!) I buy there. A sale would have no long lasting effect for me.
