Why don't coaches go to the backup QB (like a baseball team going to the bullpen)

It's obvious when a QB is having a bad night...esp. a career bad night (look at McNabb's performance yesterday).

So, why doesn't a coach yank the QB and put in the backup...at least for a few sets of down. Why have a backup and only use him when the starter is hurt? Makes no sense.

usually there's a reason why they are a backup. if both qbs are good, as in case w/ the browns something like you suggested could work, but usually the back up is a second rate. (bulger is the exception, not the rule) besides, your starter usually takes most snaps during the week leading up to the game, so timing and such will be much better w/ the starter.

mich state game vs la tech might be a good example.. still pissed about that game..

That would be why I think it doesn't happen more often.

Unlike baseball, a player thats out can come back in to a game in football. However...in football if the starting QB comes out of game for an extended period of time BEFORE the 3rd quarter he can't come back in the game.
