Why don't boy scouts do any scouting?

You would think they would do some kind of scouting to earn the name, but they don't. All they do is tie knots and cook potatoes in foil. What gives?

And since they are a private organization they have every right to choose who they allow to join.....GET OVER IT!!!!!!!!

exactly. i think people have misunderstood the purpose of boyscouts: it is to "scout" for gays and commies, and then use their knot-tying skills to tie them up.

just because you can do something, doesn't mean you should.

I think its pretty obvious almost everyone in here either:

A) Was Never in Boy Scouts

Or

B) Dropped out before they did anything

My son was a Cub Scout for 4 years. It kinda sucked, Boy Scouts supposedly are better, but he was bored by then.

BTW: I was uncomfortable signing the paperwork to be a den leader because I'm an Atheist. And one of the things you have to attest to is that you believe in a god (they're not picky, it can be any god). 🙁 I figured it was still worth it... It's not like we sit around reading bibles. We did camping trips, photo outings, bird watching, etc. Lots of crafty type projects too.

I can understand how you would feel uncomfortable. What people need to understand (I think you did), is that decisions such as not allowing atheists in the Boy Scouts are made by a select few on the administrative level. Local leaders and scouts have absolutely nothing to do with making the decisions. Thus, they are barely (if at all) enforced.

You are very right about the Cub Scouts. Plainly put, they are boring as hell. It seems like all I did was art projects the entire time. I stuck with it and Boy Scouts ended up being a lot better. We had great leaders and we actually did things. I've been to the Boundary Waters 6 times and I'm going for the seventh time in a few weeks. And I earned my Eagle Scout a few years back, which is kinda nice.

In other words, they have a right to discriminate against gays and athiests.. They may have the right but we have the right to not approve or appreciate their agenda.. And I'd seriously be miffed if any of my tax dollars were going to support biggots - I hope they don't get any state/federal funding..
Get over it..

I don't get any medicare, medicade, social security, welfare, etc... I'm miffed that my tax dollars are going to support those programs. I hope those programs all get cut just because I will never be able to collect any of them :|

Why join an organization you don't believe in? If the Boy Scouts are based around a value system that doesn't fit your own, don't participate. You have the right not to believe in their value system, as they have a right to have one. It seems people want the "perks" of the Boy Scouts, but want to tear apart the foundation it is built upon. If you take a pick axe to the foundation the rest will be left weakened and atrophied. It amazes me that people don't see that the reason why the Boy Scouts instill good values, is because the Boy Scouts are based on strong values.

Then jam a cooked potato up their arse to teach them a lesson.

er... i'm an eagle scout... as soon as i pass my eagle board of review. i finished the project and turned in the packet.

i think parents, politicians, and others just take this gay and atheist discrimination bit too far. the kids just want to go camping. let them go camping. jeez... it's a private orginization, you dont like it, start up your own! in fact there's many options already ready for you to choose from.

It amazes me that people seem to think you can't instill values like community pride, work ethics, and respect for others without also encouraging exclusionary fundamentalism.

WTF. Choosing who you allow or do not allow to participate in your private organization is your own damn business, you do not need a right to do so. Nobody has the right to grant you that right, because it is your own, as you own the business. If you don't like that, don't join the Boyscouts. Make your own rip off boyscouts just for gay athiests.
