Why don't Americans eat beets?

Sure, certain people do, but I noticed that using beets in American culture is funny for some reason. Case in point: The Office. Dwight is a beet farmer. The whole punchline here is that he grows beets! No one would laugh if he were a rye farmer.

I, personally, have witnessed a ton of jokes about beet salad and beet soup (borscht) which are a staple of Russian and Ukrainian cuisine.

But... why? Americans would eat the weirdest veggie from the Far East, but they balk at beats. What's even more mysterious, is that beat leaves are used in salads, when everyone else uses beets for their roots. It's like using potato leaves while discarding actual potatoes.

I'm baffled.

Beet greens are very excellent. On a par with spinach, IMO infinitely better than chard. I used to grow beets. Left in the ground too long they get tough and woody, I discovered. Pull before that.

I love beet borscht. Beets make excellent additions to salads. Beets, cooked and sliced, are great all by themselves. They are also nice to look at, very colorful.

I'm an American and I eat beets. They are readily available fresh or canned, at least where I live. I frequently see them in restaurants hereabouts.

Yeah, then you have to boil and peel them before consuming.

I'm not sure how popular it is in Western Europe.

Beetroot (I'm guessing its the same shit) is hell popular here, but people from Ireland and the UK have never seen it.

They're like 'WTF is this shit'?

Same with pumpkin. My Irish mate was like 'Pumpkins are for jack o'lanterns, not for eatin.'

lol

I don't like beats either.

😛

In all seriousness, I like beets in борщ and straight-up boiled.

The supermarket tends to sell beets which are ginormous and full of chemicals. A fresh, locally grown, ripe beet tastes wonderful. I think anyone who dislikes beets didn't get the right kind

I fucking love beetroot. I eat them at least once every fortnight. The funny thing is.. I shit and pee in pink after eating a lot of them. 😛

My wife buys beets every week at Whole Foods....but prolly b/c she's German and grew up with it.

I won't touch beats.

But I'll kill for pumpkin if necessary.

haha, spot on OP.

I do like beets, but I don't tend to eat them. The lady, who is Latvian and of similar regional persuasion to OP, I believe, very much loves beets. Actually, I'm not sur that "love" is a strong enough term.

Many a night has the house been flooded with steam from hours-long beet boils in preparation of beet soup. ...and various other beet dishes.

lol. pumpkins are fucking delicious. Tell your (likely alcoholic) Irish mate that roasted and salted pumpkin seeds are great with beer.

Pumpkin seeds don't count as pumpkin. 😛
Though I can eat pumpkin bread no problem.
Pumpkin pie not so much.

OK:

--Thai Pumpkin curry: tits
--Pumpkin bread: tits
--Pumpkin muffin: tits
--Pumpkin seeds: plump tits
--Pumpkin pie: big giant tits

etc

Come to think of it, I don't think I've ever eaten beets in my life. I guess I'll have to buy a can and see what they taste like.

My Great Grandma used to make a beet punch, I thought it was delicious. Unfortunately the recipe was lost when she passed away. I liked it as a kid because it made our mouths bloody red.
