Why don't all DVDs have a choice of FS/WS?

Man it pisses me off... Theres a bunch of DVDs I'd like to buy but almost all the time they're only offerred in widescreen here. It would make so much more sense to just have a choice of which to play. :|

You should be struck down for buying a DVD FS, and not WS. Thats why!

yes, your preference and opinion is foolish; although your choices effect me in no way, i will ridicule you for them.

I would definitely buy widescreen if I had a widescreen TV, but I didn't buy this 27" TV to use only 16" of it.

I know, i'm just playing. You gotta buy what you use.

As far as why they aren't both offered. Here's the only thing i can think of, but i could be wrong...

You obviously can't fit two versions of the movie on a one sided disc. It's cheaper for them to press a 1 sided disc than to do a dual sided disc. You really don't see many dual sided disc anymore.

Honestly I dunno :)

Pan & Scan sucks, even on 4:3 TVs. I curse Blockbuster for having some titles in ONLY pan and scan, why would you want to cut out half the movie again?

Edit: I'd rather watch WS than FS on my 19" monitor or my 27" TV, mainly because that's how the director intended the movie to be shown.

I started collecting DVD's almost 4 years ago, and from the start was buying widescreen because I knew I'd eventually be getting a widescreen TV. I have no problems watching a WS DVD on my regular TV, because my DVD player has a pan & scan feature.

In essence, I can zoom in on what would have been the FS movie from my WS DVD, and when I get a WS TV I'm already set.

I hope lightning strikes you down. WS is the way to go.

If they fit both FS and WS the image quality would suffer drastically.

So it has an actual feature you can set it to play the movie to fit your TV? Mine's got the regular zoom control but it looks all pixelated when I zoom in on a movie.

they used to have both, one w/s on oneside, and p&s on the other.. but WS is the preferred choice it seems, so they stopped including both. (it's annoying imo)

why would you want p&s? so your dvd can look like an edited for tv movie?

I loved those DVDs. That way I had my Widescreen and everyone else could watch the Pan and Scan version if they borrowed my DVDs.

Everyone in my family hates Widescreen. They know the movie is edited, but they don't care. They just don't want "those black bars" on the TV.

Lately Ive been seeing less of the Widescreens on store shelfs and more Pan and Scans.

lol... I partially agree with him but that brings me back to my point, why don't DVDs have a choice of FS/WS? I know I for one would like to have both, FS when I want to use all 27" of my TV and widescreen when I want to see the "extras standing on the side or scenery". I would pay a little more for this option, its better than buying 2 copies of the DVD, one FS and one WS isn't it? Although, the 2 DVDs I have that I can think of offhand that have this option are both ones I picked up off the $10 rack at Walmart, Spaceballs and Joe Dirt :p

tell them to go back to VHS if they hate widescreen movies.

It'll suck 5 years from now and everyone has a widescreen TV and your "fullscreen" DVDs will then have those annoying black bars on the sides and you'll be buying them again in Widescreen so they fill your screen properly.

I'm sorry, but anyone who prefers fullscreen over widescreen is an idiot.

Umm... I don't see that happening any time soon and definitely not in the next 5 years. Some people still watch regular TV stations (how many stations do you see that say "This station presented in widescreen format for 16x9 widescreen televisions"?) and not everyone has a huge bigscreen TV. In fact, many people still have =< 32" CRT TVs. And if they do have a bigscreen, there are still a lot of people with 4:3 bigscreens(6 of my friends that have projection TVs that I can think of offhand all have 4:3 TVs, none have 16x9).

I'd rather have the widescreen aspect ratio. On my 21" monitor, my 14.1" laptop, or my 27" tv not having the full screen doesn't bother me. I'd rather see all there is to see.
