Why doesnt xp save my setting??!!

XP seems to have a problem with saving my settings for various things. For example I disabled the clicking sound in IE, but after awhile it just comes back. And for media player, i set it on the default skin because i preffered the classic media player look, and that was the closest match. But after a while (or perhaps a reboot) it would switch back to the retarded looking default one. What's the deal with this?
