Why doesn't unreal tourney have compressed textures?

I was just wondering, since they've patched it dozens of times it seems. I've played it with my geforce ddr, and my radeon, both have framerate problems at max texture levels.. very annoying since q3a gets away with nice textures through compression. whats going on? old game engine doesn't like compression?

UT only knows S3TC (not DXTC), and the compressed high-quality textures are on the second UT CD.

Yea i know:( meaning they have some support for it, why they didn't port that over to direct x in one of their many many patches.. i dunno.. do they have something against increasing performance on non s3 cards? I mean wtf is with that:p

There are new Direct 3D and OpenGL renderers available from Epic's webpage which support S3TC and correctly work with the second CD.
