Why doesn't Samsung further Optimize? Android.

Why do Samsung Phones "featuring" touchwiz have lag, even on top end hardware?

I got a chance to play with a S5 last night. Unfortunately the Lag at times is still present. I don't think this is satisfactory at this point.

Is Touchwiz simply that bloated?

My guess is not enough Optimization is going into the devices, instead relying on hardware. You can download lots of Roms off XDA that fix many of the stock rom issues - so doesn't that point to Optimization issues?

Moto X with a Dual Core and Adreno 320 feels snappier than a S5 does. Yes I know the Moto X is 720p and Stock Android, but LG/Sony/HTC all feel faster than Samsung in day to day use from my experience.

Thoughts?

Samsung adds a thousand features on top of android, many of which require constantly running services. That takes a toll. Also the emmc used in the GS5 doesn't seem to be the best, which may have an effect on performance. You get the same exact lags on stock android when you bloat it up with a ton of xposed modules. If you disable all or most of the features on the GS5 it would probably run very smoothly.

At any given time, you'll be jumping between apps with three different design styles. About half of Samsung's software still looks like old-style Touchwiz, and the other half is more in tune with the company's still-in-development Tizen OS. The third design style is Google's apps, which Samsung must include but isn't allowed to skin.

Samsung wants to push its own software, but the company has a contractual obligation to include all of the Google apps. As a result, the device ships with two browsers, two voice assistant apps, two galleries, two app stores, three music players, and four texting apps. We really don't understand how smartphone newbies deal with this

i think the S5 was just "throw a lot of (hardware/software) crap at it and see what it sticks" over the S4

the heartrate monitor was accurate half the time, teh fingerprint scanner isn't as "perfect" as apple's implementation

Samsung is the HTC of software design during the peak of the Windows Mobile era. Same reason I avoided all HTC phones after using the PPC-6700 for a week.

I don't mean to hate on Samsung, but Touchwiz drives me nuts.

I currently have a Galaxy Mega for a work phone, and Moto X for a personal phone, and I can't stand touchwiz. (Not referencing performance here, just do not like TW)

But I guess I'm on the outside - as Samsung continues to outsell everyone. Marketing $$ plays a huge role though.

I guess it's hard for me to tell since I use Nova launcher on all my phones and disable any applications in the App Manager I don't use.

Unlike my work S4 (still on 4.3), my Note 3 (also on 4.3) doesn't have any noticeable lag and I'm a bit surprised the S5 would have any. I didn't notice any in my brief usage, though in restrospect, I think the magazine screen to the left (?) did have 'load' time, but I assumed it was an app loading, not a homescreen.

Because the point of Touchwiz is not to give optimal performance.

The point of Touchwiz is to file the rough edges off Android and make it easy and attractive to the most basic user.

Basic users have been buying and tolerating slow phones for years. What Apple and now Samsung really sell is "here is advanced technology YOU can actually use!"

In Samsung's case the technology isn't as polished, because they learned regular users will tolerated limited functionality when the alternative for a feature is no (within their range) functionality.

If you think about it, and it is sad to think about, there are probably more Galaxy S4's running in Easy Mode than total Moto X's sold. That is the power of Touchwiz.

Optimize doesn't necessarily mean make it lean. Samsung's definition of optimizing probably came from Android 2.x where Android did look ugly, and that meant adding in features. They got a bit carried away and you can tell with the S5 they learned their lesson and are scaling back.
