Why doesn't nvidia add an edge-detect or mlaa mode?

MLAA is very old.... so its not patented.
I believe it was made to make text letters look better, cant remember if it was IMB or APPLE that first intruduced it.

Nvidia could do something simular if they wanted.
Its great for older games that dont have any AA.

I think it looks fantastic, there is a misty quality to the air but it's clearly in the original as well...minus the jaggies.

Of course, MLAA is applied indiscriminately to the entire image so there are certainly cases where it might distort things it shouldn't. But I think those pics are a good example of "when it does work, it's great."

nVidia’s current stance is to stay away from shader/post-processing forms of AA.
Actually, I'm with Barfo--do you know why Nvidia has taken that stance?

Is it because post-processing effects can lead to inconsistent image quality?

If I am understanding this correctly, you are linking to a software solution for developers to enable MLAA in their games, and these screens are not the results from simply toggling the MLAA option in AMD's CCC. I wonder how this compares to AMD's implementation.

Exactly that. MLAA is nice since it works on a few oddball cases like GTA4, but for everything else I'd rather have (Tr)SSAA. I'm hoping AMD will have something like that for the 6900 series, but we'll see.

I've done much better - I've written an IQ piece about them.
It was more of an open question, but point noted.😛
