Why doesnt my Power button LED light up ????

The power button on my case doesn't light up like it should. The mobo connector had 3 pins, but the button only has 2 wires.... any ideas?

I just tried every pin combination possible until the LED lit up when I turned on the power button. I had conflicting documention on how to set it up between the case and motherboard documentation.

the two outer pins are generally the power and ground. one should have a + on it which is where your power wire goes (usually the colored one) and then the white one goes on the other pin. the middle pin doesn't do anything, unless perhaps you have a dual color power LED (standy?), then it might get used. not really sure, i've only seen that on compaq/gateway type pcs.

the mobo connector for the power LIGHT should have three pins. the mobo connector for the power SWITCH should have 2.

When I put it together my case only had a 2 wire connector that said Power/LED on it. It turns the system on and off fine, but doesn't light up. Is there another connector on the mobo just for the power light?

Sometimes. My ECS K7S5A has the switch and LED seperate. The LED connection on my Antec SX630II case is a 3 pin connector with 2 wires (one at each end), however on the mobo there's only two pins side by side so I had to move one of the pins in the case connector to match the mobo.

hmmm. i haven't seen one like that before. is the power LED built into the switch or something? generally you have a lead for each one.

Try switching the plug around. I mean, reverse the way you plug it into the motherboard.

Some use two holes, some use three. The best advice is just to experiement with every combination possible. There are not that many combinations to go through, so you should hit it quickly enough.

traditionally tho the power switch circuit isn't meant to supply a steady current is it? if i'm getting what he's saying, there's one lead (2 pin) to both turn the system on and light up the power LED. the switch just makes contact long enough to complete the circuit and start the system, which is why you can use a screwdriver or a hdd jumper to start your pc. once you let off the switch the current is broken, so there's no longer a circuit and therefore no power to the led. i guess if both are wired parallel perhaps...

Yeah, it may be a dead LED. My $180 Lian-Li came with a dead power LED. It can happen to any case. Fortunately, they're fairly easy to replace. If you can't canniblize one from an old case, you can order them from Directron.com.
