vista updates for office now, but why hasn't automatic updates ever been built into the program itself?

Actually, you have to download and install Microsoft Update in order to update anything but Windows automatically. Then, when Windows Update runs, it checks other Microsoft products on your system for updates.

Not Windows Update but Microsoft Update, fire up the WU site and there's a link to Microsoft Update. Agree to the EULA, it installs a ActiveX control and off you go.

Yes, but like I said...Microsoft Update will update all Microsoft products, no need to hunt down updates.

Just installed Office 2007 Professional, and the first thing it did was update itself automatically, right after registration and activation.

Don't give them ideas... I can see it already...

In a landmark decision Microsoft has teamed up with the Djubu Rubber Glove Company of India to bring automatic updates to Microsoft Office. Just a short body cavity search to prove you bought their product legitimately, and you'll no longer have to worry about those troublesome viruses and worms. Of course, another exam will be needed every two weeks.

It does but you have to opt-in at windows updates. If MS shipped an OS that automatically updated Office out of the box that would be leveraging their monopoly and some monkey would sue.

Be careful what you (or your attorney general) ask for...because you got it!

i was questioning why the program doesn't have updates built in.

anyhow i never knew about msft updates. i used to just go to the office updates website. i tried msft updates and it's incredibly slow. windows update and office update each take about a minute, but msft updates takes over 5 minutes. is it like this for anyone else?

Yes, but it has a lot more to check. Your windows files are only going to be in one place, so windows updates are easy. Anything else microsoft update has to search for and that takes extra time. It most likely searches your registry for software installed and their versions, and the registry can be quite large. plus, MS Update is searching for ANY programs installed, not just one or two.
