Why doesnt Microsoft make their own computers?

Rule #1 of selling a component: Don't compete with your customers. 3dfx forgot that, look at them now...

ATI is just doin fine.

Last I checked they are losing market share and delivering crappy products.

And I cant believe this thread even exists. Apple went through a real firestorm for about 15 years building their own PCs only now thanks to the resurgence of OSX and the iPod does Apple have a fighting chance.

My guess would be more money is just selling large quantities of OEM software.

look at IBM. they gave the heave-ho to their flailing comp hardware line and now focus solely on selling "solutions" i.e. much higher profit margins

in this day and age, computer equipment has become practically commoditized and will always go to the lowest bidder..very little money to be had there unless you are incredible streamlined and know how to effectively outsource and offshore (aka dell)
