Why doesn't Firefox play .GIF animations

I haven't disabled anything related to this that I can recall, but when I click on a link to a .gif that is animated it just shows the first frame and doesn't progress further. :/

EDIT: Fixed, but I'd really love to know what the problem originated from.

Doubt it. This has happened with more than one system of mine immediately following a standard format-install_XP-windowsupdate procedure.

find image.animation_mode

get rid of the value

Hey my browser plays gifs by default.
