Why doesn't consumer equipment use Neutrik Speakon connectors?

You would think with many more rugged lines trying to mimic pro audio they would follow the standard but they don't. Spring clips are garbage. :|

Have you seen how much people pay for those "gold plated" binding posts? They're OK but Speakon is much better and simple and they never blow out from bass like TRS. ;)

EDIT: I had a feeling you would show up - someone that knows what I am talking about without resorting to Google or Wikipedia. ;)

OHH yeah... Audio sales is 99% sizzle and 1% substance, most of the time. Most sales are based in an emotional component and have little to do with real results or performance.

When you've had a customer tell you that the $3000.00 speaker wires sound better than the $30.00 ones, without flinching or anything, you know it's not about the wire.

You could probably beat them with that wire (and the way some are built that would be real torture! ) and they would still say it has tighter bass or smoother highs. :|

The real fun begins with the equipment spikes and exotic wooden knobs.

If they can sell something cheaper (gold plated binding posts) for pretty much the same price, then they'll do it. I?ve used speakon plenty of times, and love it, but there are significant economic disincentives towards using it in a general consumer environment.

Does that beating count towards the "break in" period? If so, then I'm starting the whoopin' right now !!!:D

I thought that was an external word clock for synching different digital devices, but, sadly, no, it's just a clock.[/quote]

Lower profit margin, I'm guessing.

Locking banana plugs are good enough for me, and they can be had for not too much money. Linkwitz recommends Speakon connectors, though.

speakons are not better if you are looking for the best possible signal. its a spring contact. it is used because it is durable and easy to take apart and put back together. almost all high end home gear is binding post because you wont be moving it around in a loaded semi every night to a new gig, it will just be sitting there for that year. you would be amazed at what we do to make life easy for moving sound gear that could degrade the signal, like running our 3 phase power for front of house bundled with our 48 channel snake that carries line level audio to the amps on stage and the signal from the microphones on stage to the front of house board. "pro" gear is first built for power, transportability, then clarity. like the D&B C7, C7 sub and B2's that we used for our flogging molly concert in our basketball arena. they all happen to be multiples of the dimension's of the inside of a semi truck. they pack real nice with the road cases that are built the same way.

xlr is force like an rca. not spring like a speakon. xlr caries small voltages too, where the speakon carries much larger voltages.
