Why doesn't AMD make their own motherboards?

Sometimes, I hate having to buy secondary party boards- why can't we just buy reference motherboards from AMD like Intel does? AMD is about to go high-end by Q2 2003 with the Hammer and being able to provide self-branded mobos would be a boon to their effieciency and maybe even performance. It would meld two critical PC components to the same manufacturer, and AMD would have greater control over system design and performance. Less third party vendors to deal with on compatibility issues as well (ex: AMD to Gigabyte- "will your VIA Ethernet controller be compatible with our new CPU? We're concerned about your Realtek chipsets as well...")- they could do everything their way with their own components and I think we would all benefit from it.

I'm also just sick and tired of purple and red PCBs and would like to get everything back to traditional, serious, non-flashy, reference-spec green PCB boards. It's hard to push high-end business systems to your clients when you have ridiculous colors littering the inside of your boxes, not to mention gold heat sinks from everyone trying to push some kind of stupid 'bling' factor...

Why can't AMD make AMD motherboards? Your thoughts?

Just use plain beige cases no windows. Then doesn't matter what color the board is. Board color is getting to be like brand recognition. Someone sees a red board they assume it's an MSI. Purple and maybe it's a SOYO. If someone buys based on color then that is dumb. Stupid question alert!!!!!!!! Does intel manufacturer their boards or does someone make it for them? I think its the former but not sure.

None of my cases use windows- I hate those. :) None of my clients would consider it either- more of the plain black types. Beige is SO 1998! :D And yes, Intel makes their own.

Amen! Besides, all my systems and those I look after are on the floor (towers) under the desk, and the windows would not be seen anyway. Black is cool. Charcoal gray likewise. Function is more important than "looking cool." That is a kid thing. :)

Yep! Intel does make their own mobos. That started when there was not much competition. AMD has enough trouble making money with only one real competitor. The mobo field is pretty full and the profit margins would be ruinous for AMD.

RE:"Good point. Does anyone know if it's even crossed their mind though?"

More than once it has.

They simply don't have the cash, physical resources or man power to devote to multiple processor divisions, FLASH memory, and motherboards all together including the associated R&D, validation processes for each individual product.

Doubtlessly they'd like to but it's not really a viable option for them. Same reason for why they have few mainboard chipsets.

I'd say it's because they are smart. They would do much better to just keep making the processors and let others worry about the boards. Very few people care enough to "go Intel" because AMD uses third party boards, and the vast majority of the public doesn't know or care. And on the other side of the coin, I'd say Intel is wasting time and money making their boards. They are expensive and junk as far as features are concerned. I'd say there is no reason AMD would want to make their own boards, and I'll never understand why people think third party is the kiss of death.

I'm just a big 42 year old kid. ;) I spend mucho $$ on my personal rigs, and enjoy seeing the high $$ components and watercooling gear. (Acrylic case)
