Why doesn't AMD go to a 400MHz (200 DDR) FSB right now?

Since everything seems to be able to run asynchronous from the FSB, what's the reason for them not just jumping to that speed now? Is it because they want to gradually go up and get more dough from each speed grade, or because the speed jumps in processors would be 200MHz each time(.5 x 400)? And now that I think aboot that, Intel has 1.4 and 1.5GHz processors based on a 400MHz bus, so obviously they're not following .5 multiplier increments. Craziness! Someone fill me in please =).
 
Why not 200mhz DDR, well I don't think the EV6 bus is quite there yet. The new one is 133 ddr, so going to 200 is a big jump and probably isn't stable.

Second, the AMD760 chipset does not support asynchronous ram speeds and 200mhz ddr ram isn't here yet either.

As for the multiplier, I think it's calculated based on the non-ddr speed (for example 1.2ghz is 12x100 and not 6x200) Same for the P4, it's 100 quad-pumped (effectively 400) so that explains the 1.4 and 1.5 ghz.
 
Nah. It's capabal. Overclockers in japan or whatever have modified their boards and gotten DDR speeds of 300+Mhz ..

the multiplier is based on the oscillator, which runs at 100MHz. intel is following 1x multiplier increments.

i'm pretty sure the EV6 is not stable at 400MHz right now. beyond the fact that nVidia boards are sucking up all the fast DDR RAM.
 
The EV6 bus that the Athlon(and all its derivatives) is using is designed for a maximum speed of 400MHz(i.e. 200MHz running DDR). AMD probably would want to save the 400MHz, if its even possible, for the last of the Athlons, before the Hammer takes over the market of the Athlon. Besides, there's really no need for a 400MHz bus right now, with Athlon leading the pack for pure speed, performance and price. Bumping it up from 200MHz to 266MHz is the next logical step that AMD took. The following step might be a 333MHz FSB, perhaps finally followed by a 400MHz FSB if the Hammer hasn't already taken over the Athlon's market.
