Why does yum/apt repos sometimes all fail with 404?

I have this happen often on all sorts of random systems, either with yum or apt-get.

I'll go to do an update or install something, and every single repo will just fail with 404, rendering the entire system unable to install or update anything.

Why does this happen? Here's an example output:

Why is it doing this? Is there a way to fix this?


Trying to install through Muon software center just seems to hang as well. It's like if the entire installation's software infrastructure completely gets corrupted or something.

I've had this happen on various systems on different occasions, and not just restricted to one OS. I don't get why this happens. If I HTTP to those links the folder is valid but not the file.

It could be that their server is down for maintenance. Try again in a few hours is the best solution in such a case.

Nope when I run into a system that does this, it does it all the time. in some cases if it's not a critical or complex system I just reinstall but in the case of production servers or workstations it's too much work to clean install but I end up being stuck with no ability to update.

If I actually go to the URLs it's trying, the files arn't there. So it's a legit 404, but why is it trying to access the wrong files and how do I fix it?

When I used to have Debian (2 years ago) this was frequent enough but after trying in the next few hours it was working.

Check your repositories, are they right?

I've never gotten this issue. (With Debian).

Just to make sure, are you updating apt source package lists before trying to install said app?

I don't know too much about Ubuntu, but have you tried a $ apt-get dist-upgrade?

I think he is running servers so a distribution upgrade will not be what he wants.

The issues I had with Debian were around 2 and a half years ago, Debian 6, and I was on stable.

In this particular case it's just a workstation but I don't have access to a CD to reinstall if I have to (at least not in a pinch, I'm at work, I'd have to bring it from home) so I could try stuff as long as it wont trash my install.

I googled that it has to do with the distro being no longer supported, but my pc at home has an even older distro and updates fine.

Is there a way to completely refresh the repositories to factory defaults? I wonder if there's some kind of corruption that's causing it to look at invalid urls or something.

This particular laptop is running Ubuntu 13.04, Raring Ringtail.

Hmmm so they just outright move everything and it breaks apt/yum? That seems like a bad practice. You'd think apt-get update would fix that though. For this particular system I'll just upgrade to the latest distro as it's just a laptop I use at work for general testing of stuff or just surfing so not a big deal to have to reconfigure everything as there's not much on it anyway.

I have a physical server that's giving me trouble too but that is not something I just want to take down on a whim to install a new OS and reconfigure everything. Have an online server too that's giving me other issues, it updates, but it spams out millions of errors. Been watching for dedicated server deals though so I can move it. I may actually replace the home physical server with a raspbery Pi though, it's literally just an environmental control server that controls an arduino and relay controller so I'll probably set the DIN rail and stuff in a nema enclosure and power it with a Pi. That is something that's not too huge of a deal to take down for a day. I can manually latch relays if I have to, such as the furnace if it gets too cold.

Guess I need to start looking at setting up my own internal repository mirrors then standardize on a distro so it can use that repo, so when they pull it off I don't get screwed over. Just need to make sure I keep my own mirrors updated. Of course I'll stop getting new updates when they stop updating it though, but at least if I decide to install something I still can. It's kind of unrealistic to update distros at the rate new ones come out especially for non redundant production systems.

The Ubuntu apt repos take up a substantial amount of disk space, and it's unreasonable to ask mirrors (who are all volunteering their resources) to maintain obsolete repositories indefinitely.

Ubuntu offers LTS releases for precisely this reason.

Edit: NM I got it working... had another instance where everything went to crap but yum clean all fixed it. Usually that does not work.

In my case it had turned out that the distro I was using was not a LTS version, which means long term support, the non LTS distros are supported for a shorter period and at some point after they go out of support they tend to pull down all the repositories too. Just did a quick Google search and seems support for 13.04 ended in 2014-01-27.

You may have to reinstall the latest version, and idealy pick the LTS version. There might be a hack to make it work but I've never had good luck with that. When you try to use non standard repos sometimes there's conflicts and other issues that can arise.
