Why does WinXP SP1 keep starting multiple instances of cmd.exe?

Yeah so I open up task manager, and in the processes section it lists cmd.exe like three or four times. I close them all, but when I open up task manager again five minutes later they are all back again, and they all use up the same amount of memory - 1120kb. Anybody know why this keeps happening and how to stop it?
