Thumbs.db is the thumbnail database for any folder with images in it. WinXP and beyond has the ability to view images directly in Explorer.

If you disable the display of Hidden Files you wont see that thing.

you can also disable creation of thumbnails in the folder options.

Stop telling Windows Explorer to show system files and you won't see thumbs.db

It allows you to use the thumbnail folder view. Pre-generated thumbnails are stored in thumbs.db

Otherwise, just opening the folder in thumbnail view could take several minutes to generate the thumbnails for a handful of large pictures...and it would have to re-generate them every time.

Also I think by default in Win7 and 8 the icon view also shows thumbnails, not just the thumbnail view.
